Alex Devine joined the Duke coaching staff in February 2024 and currently serves as the associate defensive line coach, working primarily with the defensive tackles. He was a defensive analyst during the 2024 campaign.Â
Duke’s defensive tackles excelled in 2024 and helped the Blue Devils finish second nationally in tackles for loss per game (8.9) and fourth in sacks per game (3.3). Devine helped guide Kendy Charles to Second Team All-ACC accolades after producing 50 tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. Redshirt junior Aaron Hall was an honorable mention all-league selection as he finished with 41 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.Â
Devine came to Durham after spending one year (2023) at Holmes Community College as the assistant defensive line coach. During his time with the Bulldogs, he helped mentor three defensive linemen who earned NCAA scholarships to Division I schools.Â
Prior to that, Devine spent two seasons (2021-22) at Utah State University as the defensive front specialist (2021) and defensive line coach (2022). While in Logan, Utah, Devine coached the defense to No. 3 (2021) and 11 (2022) national ranking in tackles for loss and as well as appearances in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl and SERVPRO First Responders Bowl. In addition, during his first year, the Aggies tied the school record with 11 wins (11-3) and claimed their first Mountain West Championship.
Before his time at Utah State, Devine worked at the University of Miami in a variety of roles from 2016-20. He spent three years (2016-18) as a graduate assistant before being elevated to an assistant director of player development his final two seasons (2019-20).
Devine was an offensive lineman for Mississippi Delta Community College for two years (2011-12) before finishing his college tenure at Mississippi State University.
A native of Vaiden, Miss., Devine graduated from Mississippi State with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in December 2015. While working toward his degree, Devine began his coaching career as a student assistant coach and student recruiting assistant for two years (2014-15), where the Bulldogs compiled a 19-7 overall record and appearances in the 2014 Capital One Orange Bowl and the 2015 Belk Bowl. He also obtained his master’s degree in liberal studies from Miami.
