WNBA All-Star Jessica Breland joined the Blue Devils in November 2020 to serve as an operations intern for three months during the 2020-21 season.
Breland, a nine-year WNBA veteran, has played for five different teams – Connecticut, New York, Indiana, Chicago and Atlanta – throughout her professional career. In total, she has appeared in 242 games including 180 starts. She holds 1,766 points, 1,423 rebounds, 324 assists, 328 blocks and 188 steals throughout her career. Currently, Breland ranks 12th all-time in career blocks per game in WNBA history with 1.3.
Breland has earned multiple honors throughout her career, including being selected as a 2014 WNBA All-Star after leading the league in blocks that season with the Chicago Sky. She was also named to the 2018 WNBA First Team All-Defensive Team, her first season with the Atlanta Dream.
Breland came into the league in 2011 with the Connecticut Sun as Duke head coach Kara Lawson was in her 11th season in the WNBA and the duo helped the Sun collect a 21-13 ledger. Lawson and Breland guided Connecticut to a first-place finish in the Eastern Conference, before falling in the semifinals of the playoffs.
Prior to the WNBA, Breland was a standout at North Carolina. After emerging onto the national scene and earning All-ACC honors as a junior, her collegiate career came to a halt as she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Breland fought and beat the cancer and returned for her senior season in 2010-2011. She received the 2011 Honda Inspiration Award which is given to a female college athlete who has overcome adversity to excel in her sport.
Breland averaged 12.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game on her way to honorable mention All-ACC honors during her senior season. She closed out her collegiate career with 1,535 points, 960 rebound 295 blocks (third in program history) and 169 steals.
