Maciek Sykut joined the Duke men’s tennis program in July 2020, and currently serves as the associate head coach. He served two seasons as an assistant coach before being elevated to his current role.
Sykut has been an integral part of Duke’s success during his time in Durham, helping the Blue Devils to a 51-27 overall ledger, including a 25-10 ACC mark. He has helped Duke bring in three top-25 recruiting classes that were ranked No. 9 (2021-22), No. 25 (2022-22), and No. 25 (2023-24) according to TennisRecruiting.net.
At the conclusion of the 2022-23 season, Sykut was tabbed as the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year after helping Duke conclude the year with a final ranking of No. 11. Under Sykut’s guidance in 2023, the Blue Devils posted their seventh 20-win season, a program-record 11 ACC victories and made their 30th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In addition, of the 21 nationally ranked foes Duke faced in 2023, the Blue Devils finished with a 15-6 (.714) ledger. Nine of those wins came during a season-high nine-match winning-streak, including four over top-20 competition. Six of the Blue Devils' seven losses came to top-25 programs with three coming by a 4-3 decision.
Sykut had a hand in the development of Pedro Rodenas, who was selected the 2023 ACC Freshman of the Year after concluding his first year in Durham with an overall record of 33-7, including a 26-2 dual match ledger and an 11-1 ACC mark.
Under Sykut’s guidance in 2021-22, Duke posted a 17-9 overall mark, including an 8-4 record in ACC play. A considerable improvement from his first year in which Duke finished at 12-11 and 6-5, respectively.
He oversaw seven victories over nationally ranked opponents, helped the Blue Devils break back into the top-25, and achieve the program’s 29th overall appearance in the NCAA Team Championship field. Four of those wins over nationally ranked competition came during a season-high winning-streak of six consecutive victories, including a 5-2 triumph over rival and No. 17 ranked North Carolina. That win marked the Blue Devils’ first over the Tar Heels since April 20, 2014. The Blue Devils also concluded the regular season with eight ACC victories, marking the first time since the 2016-17 season in which Duke achieved that feat.
Sykut worked with numerous Blue Devils during his second season, specifically Andrew Zhang, Garrett Johns and Connor Krug. Zhang led the program in singles wins, including a 12-4 dual mark at the Blue Devils second spot and an impressive 8-1 record in ACC play. He had a solid fall season as well, winning the 2021 ITA Carolina Regional Championship singles title after defeating Wake Forest’s Taha Baadi. That victory handed Duke its first title since 2011 when Chris Mengel earned the honor. Johns received an at-large bid to the NCAA Singles championship and ranked in the top-50 throughout much of the 2022 season. Playing on Duke’s top court in every match, Johns held an 8-8 mark against nationally ranked opponents, including a match-clinching victory over No. 22 Brian Cernoch of North Carolina. He finished second on the team in match-clinching wins with five and was named a Second Team All-ACC honoree at the conclusion of the season. In his first year in a Blue Devil uniform, Krug posted a 19-13 overall record and a 4-3 mark in ACC play. The rookie also finished 3-1 against nationally ranked opponents. During the fall season, Krug was the only freshman to reach semifinals of ITA Carolina Regional, defeating two nationally ranked top-50 opponents.
During his first season, Sykut helped the Blue Devils to a No. 36 ranking in the final Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll after concluding the year with a 12-11 mark, including a 6-5 record in ACC play. Duke was limited to only a spring season due to the COVID-19 pandemic still being a factor, but the Blue Devils were able to string together a four-match win streak during the season and two wins over ranked opponents. Sykut helped mentor three players to All-ACC recognition as well, including Zhang who earned a 13-5 mark on the year.
Sykut came to Durham from the University of Arizona, where he helped build the program for three years (2018-20), earning a promotion to associate head coach in June of 2019.
Before the 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19 pandemic, Sykut assisted the Wildcats to an 11-3 record while reaching as high as No. 23 in the national rankings. During his stint at Arizona, the Wildcats’ team ranking improved from No. 107 to No. 29 from 2017 to 2019, while garnering the highest-ranked recruiting class in program history at No. 6 in 2020.
In 2019, he helped led the program to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2010 and guided the team to three consecutive Pac-12 wins for the first time in 20 years. At Arizona, he coached three Pac-12 All-Conference selections, six Pac-12 All-Academic honorees, an NCAA singles qualifier and an ITA Southwest Rookie of the Year in Jonas Ziverts.
Before his time out west, Sykut spent a year in Raleigh at N.C. State, serving as an assistant coach. This was his second stint with the Wolfpack, as he also spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant with the program from 2012-13. In his three years at N.C. State, he coached five All-ACC selections and helped the program to two consecutive NCAA appearances.
Sykut also served as the director of junior tennis at North Ridge Country Club in 2014.
At the professional level, Sykut ranked as high as No. 578 in the ATP singles rankings and No. 145 in doubles. During his career, he won 13 ITF Pro Circuit doubles events and a pair of ATP Challenger doubles titles.
Collegiately, Sykut played at Florida State University from 2005-09, where he compiled 175 career victories to rank third all-time in program history. His 93 singles wins were second all-time, while his 82 doubles feats were fifth in the Seminole records book.
Sykut graduated from FSU in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in economics. He and his wife, Erica, have two children, Aleksander and Julian.
