DURHAM, N.C. – Duke rising sophomore Nicolas Alvarez and recently graduated Raphael Hemmeler were the Blue Devils’ two student-athletes named to the 2015 All-ACC Academic Men’s Tennis Team, as announced Wednesday by league commissioner John Swofford.
Alvarez was one of just two freshmen to be named to the team, joining Wake Forest’s Skander Mansouri. Hemmeler earned All-ACC Academic distinction for the fourth time in his career, joining Dylan Arnould and Kiril Dimitrov as the only players in program history to be on the team all four years of their careers. Hemmeler, Virginia’s Mitchell Frank and NC State’s Austin Powell were the only four-time selections on this year’s squad.
Duke has had at least two student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic Team all 10 seasons since the award’s inception in 2006.
On the court in 2014-15, Alvarez turned in one of the best freshman campaigns in program history and earned All-America honors. He became Duke’s 21st All-American, and the first since Henrique Cunha in 2012. Alvarez ended the year ranked No. 11 in the final Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll, the highest for a Blue Devil since Cunha was fifth in 2013. Alvarez was also named the ITA Carolina Region Player to Watch at the end of the season and earned first team All-ACC honors after going 31-11 overall with all 11 losses coming against nationally ranked opponents. The 31 wins are tied for the eighth most by a freshman in program history. He also received bids to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
Hemmeler finished an outstanding season by being named the 2015 ITA Carolina Region Farnsworth Senior Player of the Year, a second team All-ACC honoree and the team MVP. He earned bids to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships and reached a season-high ranking of 57th from the ITA entering the NCAA Team Championship. He became the 14th member of Duke’s 100-career singles win club and finished the year with a team-best 35-10 record, tied for the sixth most wins in a year in program history. He finished his career ranked second in program history in combined wins with 231 (116 singles/115 doubles), second in ACC doubles wins (29), tied for third in ACC singles wins (32), fourth in singles victories and doubles wins, tied for sixth in doubles winning percentage (.747) and sixth in singles winning percentage (.753).
The league had 12 schools represented on the 2014 All-ACC Academic Team, led by Virginia with five honorees. Louisville senior Sebastian Stiefelmeyer was named the 2015 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 and are to be presented annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in each sport. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average.
