For individuals interested in the Mentoring Program:
To mentor with Duke Athletics, we look for candidates that demonstrate a high level of integrity as well as candidates that are graduate students or have a master’s degree.
Academic mentors play a critical function in the academic and social acclimation of first-year student-athletes. The mentor serves as an academic resource, offering learning strategies, study skills and time management techniques for academic success. More broadly, the mentor/student relationship is built on trust, gained through frequent interaction and working together. The academic mentor will work primarily with students on writing. An ability to write and convey proficient writing technique is essential.
The current hourly rate for mentors is $18.00/hour. Sessions are scheduled either once or twice a week for 1.5 hours per session, depending on student need.
Maintaining academic integrity is extremely important. Mentors are persons of integrity, who can distinguish the difference between right and wrong, and who are fully committed to following NCAA rules and the Duke Community Standard.
