DURHAM, N.C.- Two incoming women's basketball recruits -- Abby Waner and Carrem Gay -- have been selected to participate in both the McDonald's All-America and WBCA High School All-America games. The WBCA game will take place on April 2 at the University of Indianapolis Hall in Indianapolis, Ind., while the McDonald's game will be played on March 30 at the Edmund P. Joyce Center in Notre Dame, Ind.
Duke's other two recruits -- Brittany Mitch and Keturah Jackson -- were named honorable mention for the for the WBCA All-America game.
Waner, a product of Highlands Ranch, Colo., guided her ThunderRidge H.S. team to a 26-2 record and a third straight state championship as the Grizzlies defeated Horizon, 60-48, last Friday. The 5-10 guard averaged 32.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 6.0 steals, while hitting 50.2 percent of her field goals and 34.0 percent from three-point land on the season. For her career, Waner scored 2,680 points.
Labeled as the second-best recruit in the class of 2005 by Blue Star Report, Waner will arrive at Duke as one of the most highly-rated players coming out of high school. As a junior, Waner averaged 31.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 5.4 steals, while leading her team to a 22-2 record and the Class 5A State Championship. Listed as the best shooter in the class, Waner recently scored 61 points in her final home game setting a new single game scoring mark in Colorado high school basketball.
Gay, a native of New York, N.Y., has led Christ the King H.S. to a 26-0 record and are currently ranked No. 1 in the nation. On the season, Gay is averaging 18.2 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.2 blocks and 7.4 assists. Gay has led Christ the King to a 76-4 record and a total of 1,174 points over her three years on the varsity squad. As a junior, Gay averaged 15.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 4.3 blocks, while leading Christ the King to a 26-2 record and finished ranked fourth nationally.
Coming off a very stellar senior campaign, Jackson averaged 19.8 points, 9.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists, 4.0 steals, while hitting 44.6 percent from three-point land. A native of Columbia, S.C., Jackson led her Dreher H.S. team to a 24-4 overall record as a senior. Jackson scored a season-high 38 points in a game this season, while scoring 20 or more points 14 times.
As a junior, Jackson averaged 18.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 5.0 steals last season , while being named the 2004 Gatorade Player of the Year in South Carolina and the South Carolina Class 3A "Miss Basketball.
Mitch led her St. John's squad to a 28-3 record and averaged 14.7 points, 8.6 assists, 7.8 steals, 5.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and hit 52.8 percent of her field goals as a senior. A 6-2 guard out of McLean, Va., Mitch has been listed as the fourth-best wing in the class of 2005 by All-Star Girls Report. Her St. John's team concluded the season by winning the Bishop Walsh Tournament, beating 15th-ranked Good Counsel, 76-63, in the final, Archbishop Carroll, 71-66, in the semifinals and Archbishop Pendergast, 77-54, in the quarterfinals.
As a junior, Mitch averaged 14.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 3.8 steals, while leading St. John's to a 26-6 record. She was named second team All-America by Scout.com, first team All-Conference and first team All-State as a junior. She has been ranked 22nd in the nation by Blue Star Report.
In the latest USA Today Super 25 Girls' Basketball Rankings, Gay's team is listed No. 1 in the nation, Waner's is eighth and Mitch's St. John's squad is 14th. The Duke recruiting class has been tabbed second-best in the nation by both the Blue Star Report and the All-Star Girls Report.
With the addition of the four recruits, the Blue Devils will boast a roster of 14-- four seniors: Monique Currie, Mistie Williams, Lindsey Harding and Jessica Foley; two juniors: Alison Bales and Caitlin Howe-- four sophomores: Chante Black, Laura Kurz, Wanisha Smith and Emily Waner-- and four freshmen. Currie, listed as a senior academically and junior eligibility wise, has the option to return in 2005-06 or head to the WNBA.
The Blue Devils have brought in the top-ranked recruiting classes in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, while the 1999 and 2004 classes were fourth in the nation.
