Duke Lands League-High Eight Players On Academic All-ACC Football Squad

DURHAM, N.C. - Led by repeat selections Giuseppe Aguanno, Christian Mitchell and Kenneth Stanford, a league-best eight Duke Blue Devils were named to the Academic All-ACC Football Team announced on Tuesday by the league office. Joining Aguanno, Mitchell and Stanford were Brendan Dewan, Eli Nichols, Andy Roland, Malcolm Ruff and Mike Schneider.
Overall, 13 players who earned first or second team all-conference honors this past season also secured spots on the 50-member 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic football team as announced by Commissioner John Swofford. To be eligible, a player must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the fall semester or have maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
The league's 2004 ACC Player of the Year -- Virginia Tech quarterback Bryan Randall -- and Maryland's Nick Novak, the ACC's all-time leading scorer with 393 points, are among the league's academic honorees as are two players who earned consensus first-team All-America recognition this past season -- Virginia tight end Heath Miller and Miami defensive back Antrel Rolle. Other first or second team All-ACC selections named are Georgia Tech's Travis Bell and James Butler, Maryland's C.J. Brooks, Domonique Foxworth and Adam Podlesh, North Carolina's Jason Brown, Virginia's Zac Yarbrough, Virginia Tech's Jeff King and Brandon Pace.
Aguanno, a linebacker from Staten Island, N.Y., led Duke in tackles in 2004 with 94 and was named the team's Most Valuable Player while Dewan, a linebacker from Austin, Texas, finished second on the team with 84 total stops with five tackles for loss and one interception.
Mitchell, an offensive tackle from Amherst, N.Y., closed out his career with 37 career starts along the Blue Devil line. Nichols, a defensive end from Crawfordville, Fla., racked up 47 tackles and three sacks in his first season as a starter while Roland caught 20 passes for 257 yards and a team-leading three touchdowns.
Ruff, a linebacker from Baltimore, Md., recorded 58 tackles on the year while Schneider, a quarterback from Sharon, Pa., completed 150-of-253 passes for 1,527 yards and eight touchdowns. In his senior season, Stanford, a cornerback from Detroit, Mich., picked up 51 tackles and two interceptions.
