Duke's Jason Williams led all balloting for the 1999-2000 ACC Rookie of the Year with 47 votes. NC State's Damien Wilkins was second with 26 votes.
In the team projections, Duke was picked second behind North Carolina. The Blue Devils had 16 media members picking them to capture a third straight ACC regular season title. North Carolina received 74 first place votes.
In the probable order of finish in the 1999-2000 conference race, North
Carolina picked up 74 of the 90 first- place votes and out-distanced
second place Duke by a 792-to-712 margin. The Blue Devils garnered 16
first-place votes. Wake Forest was picked third, receiving 577 points.
Maryland (481) edged NC State (442) for fourth while Georgia Tech (396)
was the media's choice for sixth, followed by Virginia (358), Florida
State (179) and Clemson (113).
Morris, an honorable mention AP All-America and first team All-ACC as a
sophomore a year ago, out-distanced Duke's Shane Battier and Wake
Forest's Robert O'Kelley in ACC Player of the Year balloting by 28
votes. One of the most versatile players in the ACC, Morris finished
third among league leaders in field goal percentage (.554), third in
blocked shots (2.3), fourth in free throw percentage (.825), eighth in
rebounds (7.1), tenth in steals (1.6) and tenth in scoring (15.4).
Joining Morris the first team are North Carolina's Ed Cota who earned
second-team All-ACC honors a year ago after averaging a career-high 10.5
points and 7.4 assists. Cota enters his senior season only 330 assists
shy of tying the ACC and NCAA career assist record and is bidding to
become the first player in ACC history to lead the league in assists
four times.
Wake Forest's Robert O'Kelley is the league's leading returning scorer
after finishing third in the ACC a year ago with a 17.5 per game average
. A second-team All-ACC choice in 1998-99, O'Kelley led the Deacs in
assists (2.0) and minutes played (35.0).
Duke's Shane Battier tallied 9.1 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while
shooting .545 from the floor in 1998-99. Battier earned first-team
Basketball News All-Defensive Team honors a year ago.
Georgia Tech senior Jason Collier averaged 17.2 points and 7.3 rebounds
and earned second-team All-ACC honors a year ago after transferring from
Indiana.
