DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 17 Duke men's tennis team is set to open its dual match slate with a trio of matches at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils host Elon on Friday at 5 p.m. and follow with a Sunday doubleheader against James Madison (11 a.m.) and North Carolina Central (5 p.m.). Parking is available in the Blue Zone with live stats and video available for all three matches. Friday's contest will also be a Royal Blue match.Â
SEASON OPENER SUCCESS
Since head coachÂ
Ramsey Smith took over in 2008-09, the Blue Devils hold a 15-2 record in season openers with the lone losses coming to Elon, 4-3, in 2014 and No. 20 South Carolina, 4-1, in 2021.
HISTORY WITH ELON
For the first time since 2022, Duke will face in-state foe Elon. The Blue Devils own a 15-1 record versus the Phoenix with the lone loss in 2014. In the last match, on January 23, 2022, Duke claimed a 7-0 victory.Â
HISTORY WITH JAMES MADISON
The Blue Devils and Dukes will meet for just the second time. On March 12, 1987, Duke claimed a 7-2 victory versus James Madison in Durham.Â
HISTORY WITH NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL
Duke leads the all-time series with the Eagles 20-0 with all matches being played on the Blue Devils' campus. These two programs have met annually since 2009 with one exception, in 2021. In the last match, on January 19, 2025, Duke recorded a 6-1 victory.Â
NEW LOOK ON COURTS THREE THROUGH FIVE
The Blue Devils' lineup will look much different in 2026 on the back courts.
Pedro Rodenas and
Cooper Williams return after splitting matches on the top two slots last spring. Of Duke's ACC singles regulars on courts three through five, however, none return asÂ
Connor Krug (10 matches),
Remy Dugardin (five matches) and
Andreja Petrovic (five matches) must be replaced. In doubles, the Blue Devils do not return an intact pair that played in an ACC match last spring.
Gerard Planelles Ripoll brings his 7-0 ACC doubles record back to the fold while Rodenas (six ACC doubles wins) and Williams (seven ACC doubles wins) also return. Â
A LONG WELCOME
Duke brings in one freshman for 2026 in
Dylan Long. A blue chip prospect with aÂ
TennisRecruiting.net national ranking of No. 6 upon his signing with the Blue Devils, Long was listed as the No. 1 prospect from the Midwest and Indiana. He reached No. 1 in the USTA Boys' 18s singles rankings in August 2024, won the singles USTA Boys' National Clay Court Championships in July 2024 and was a finalist in doubles. Long received his first ATP point in November 2024 at the 15K Futures event in Boca Raton, Florida.
UP NEXT
The Blue Devils travel to NC State for the ITA Kickoff Weekend January 23-24. Duke will face the Wolfpack at 1 p.m. on January 23 before facing either Texas A&M or Tennessee on January 24. The start time for the January 24 match has yet to be determined.
