NEW YORK – Duke men's tennis turned in an impressive run at the 2025 US Open. Current juniorÂ
Cooper Williams paired with former Blue DevilÂ
Theo Winegar in doubles while alumÂ
Garrett Johns represented Duke in singles.
"It has been an exciting US Open for Duke tennis," head coachÂ
Ramsey Smith said. "I am extremely proud of Cooper, Theo and Garrett for their breakthrough performances on tennis' biggest stage. We had so much Duke support in NYC. These three young men rose to the occasion and represented our program extremely well."
Williams and Winegar entered the event's main draw as a doubles wild card which they earned by capturing the American Collegiate Wild Card Playoff in June. The pair opened play August 30 with a straight-set win over Petr Nouza and Patrick Rikl 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.Â
Â
On September 1, Williams and Winegar were able to push their match to consecutive tiebreaks but ultimately fell in the second round on Grandstand Stadium to the German duo of Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3). Krawietz and Puetz were seeded No. 4 in the draw and won the 2024 ATP Finals.Â
Â
"As a coach, it is particularly rewarding to see players put in the hard work, take advantage of the full power of Duke's resources, and transition strongly to professional tennis," Smith said.
Â
Johns also made his mark in singles qualifying. He opened his run with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 27 seed Colton Smith before edging out Oliver Crawford 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to advance to the final round of qualifying. In a hard fault battle against Switzerland's Leandro Riedi, Johns eventually fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to come up just short of the main draw. Riedi went on to advance to the fourth round of the main draw with a trio of victories before bowing out to Australia's Alex de Minaur. With this result, Johns will break into the top 300 in the ATP world rankings for the first time in his professional career.
Â
"It doesn't get any bigger than the US Open," Smith said. "It was so rewarding to see Cooper, Theo and Garrett living out their dream on the big stage."
