VERNON HILLS, Ill. - Former Duke men's golfer
Luke Sample has qualified for the Korn Ferry Tour NV5 Invitational and will begin play on Thursday, July 24 at The Glen Club in Glenview, Ill. Sample earned his spot in the field through open qualifying on Monday, July 21, shooting a 7-under, 65, at White Deer Run Golf Club, tying for second with two other players for the final qualification spots from the site.
The recently graduated senior, who still currently holds his amateur status, used a blistering back-nine to secure his spot in the tournament field. After making the turn to the back-nine following a bogey-free 4-under in the opening nine holes, Sample dropped back to 2-under with a double-bogey on the par-3 12th. From there, he reeled off five birdies across his final six holes to finish one shot clear of a potential multi-golfer playoff for the final qualifying spot. The New York, N.Y., native finished 4-under on both the par-5's and par-4's, tying for first and second-best individual scoring on those holes, respectively, while also tying with one other golfer for the most birdies for the round, with nine.
Sample is currently slated to be joined in the event by three other former Blue Devils,
Ryan Blaum,
Adam Long and
Julian Suri. Suri currently ranks 60th on the points list for the season and has played in 15 events this season, highlighted by a tie for second place with a 27-under, 257, at the Veritex Bank Championship. Blaum is 72nd on the points list through 15 events, including a fifth-place finish at 17-under, 263, at the 118 Visa Argentina Open.
Blaum is the first Blue Devil scheduled to tee off, going off of No. 1 at 8:14 a.m. Suri and Long, follow at 9:25 a.m., off of No. 10 and 1:28 p.m., off of No. 1, respectively. Sample rounds out the Duke representation with a 3:12 p.m., PM tee time, starting his round on No. 10.
