PINEHURST, N.C.– Duke women's golf incoming freshman
Avery McCrery turned in a solid performance this week at the North & South Women's Amateur as she advanced to the quarterfinals of match play in Pinehurst.
A native of Wilmington, Del., McCrery fired rounds of 72 and 70 in stroke-play qualifying to earn the No. 6 seed heading into match play.
In her first round match against Elizabeth Rudisill, McCrery found herself down two holes with six remaining. McCrery won holes No. 13 and No. 14 and then closed the match by winning hole No. 18 to win, 1UP. Against Summer Lee in the second round, McCrery had a great start by winning holes No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 to take a 3UP lead. Lee tried to make a comeback by winning No. 9 and No. 10 to trim McCrery's lead to 1UP. McCrery would end up winning the match, 1UP.
McCrery faced Mackenzie Lee in the quarterfinals, but Lee opened strong by winning holes No. 2, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 to take a 3UP lead. McCrery won hole No. 13 to cut the lead to 2UP, but Lee ended up taking the match 3&2.
