DURHAM, N.C. – A trio of Duke women's tennis student-athletes –
Irina Balus,
Liv Hovde and
Ellie Coleman – earned All-ACC recognition Thursday as the league announced All-ACC teams in both singles and doubles, following a vote of the head coaches.
Balus and Hovde, both Blue Devil rookies, were tabbed to the singles second and third teams, respectively. The 18th-ranked doubles team of Balus and senior
Ellie Coleman were voted to the second team.
A native of Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, Balus has collected a 17-9 overall singles record with 10 of those victories against ranked opponents. She has been ranked as high as No. 8 nationally on the season and registered two wins against top-10 ranked foes. Balus was a two-time ACC Freshman of the Week selection on the year.
Hovde has collected a 6-6 singles ledger on the year with three wins versus ranked opponents. A product of Daniel Island, S.C., Hovde notched wins against No. 15 Thea Rabman of North Carolina and No. 25 Mao Mushika of California to help lead the Blue Devils to ACC victories. She has been ranked as high as No. 54 nationally in singles and earned ACC Freshman of the Week once.
Balus and Hovde have played No. 1 and No. 2 singles for the Blue Devils as rookies.
Duke's doubles duo of Balus and Coleman received All-ACC Second Team accolades, after totaling a 21-12 overall record and 7-5 ACC mark. They have collected six wins against ranked opponents and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Championship in the fall to earn All-America honors. Coleman, who is from Midland, Mich., also earned All-ACC Third Team honors for doubles in 2023 as well.
The Blue Devils collected an undefeated 12-0 mark in the league to register the ACC regular season title and have been ranked as high as No. 3 nationally. It was the first undefeated league campaign for Duke since 2012 and marked the 22nd ACC regular season title in program history.
Duke (21-3) awaits the NCAA Tournament selection show Monday, April 28 at 5 p.m.
