HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Duke women's golf team concluded the second round of play at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Tuesday and heads into Wednesday's final round in 14th-place at the 6,413-yard, par-71 Long Cove Club in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Through 36 holes, Duke has signed for rounds of 296 and 306 for a 34-over, 602. Junior
Andie Smith leads the Blue Devils with a 5-over, 147, and is tied for 27th overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- On Tuesday, Andie Smith opened with a couple of pars, before suffering a bogey on No. 3.She then parred the next two holes and hit her 50-degree wedge from 118 yards on the 527-yard, par-5 sixth to seven feet for birdie to return to even.After a double-bogey on No. 9, Smith opened the back nine by hitting her 50-degree wedge from 106 yards to 15 feet for birdie on No. 10 to get back to 1-over.She closed the day at 2-over during the final eight holes to finish with a 74.Smith hit 11 fairways and 13 greens.
- Both freshmen Carla De Troia and Anna Cañado Espinal had rounds of 77 in the second round.
- Espinal was 2-over through four holes, but settled down to shoot 2-under over her next 12 holes with birdies on No. 6 and No. 15.She dropped six shots over the final two holes to finish with a 77.
- De Troia shot 3-over, 39, on the front nine and 3-over, 38 on the back en route to shooting a 77.She registered a pair of birdies on No. 2 and No. 16.
- Senior Rylie Heflin was limited without a birdie as she signed for a 78, while sophomore Katie Li had an 81 and was held without a birdie in the second round.
NOTES
- Arkansas (573) and South Carolina (573) lead the field, while LSU (577), Arizona State (579) and Wake Forest (582) round out the top five teams.
- Kendall Todd of Arkansas continues to lead the field with a 2-under, 140.
- Duke finished its season low for birdies in a row this season with six.
WHAT IS NEXT
- Duke tees off Wednesday in the final round beginning at 8:30 a.m., off No. 10 along with Mississippi State and UCLA.
