The full 68-team bracket for the 2025 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament was revealed on Sunday, with the Blue Devils earning their 47th all-time bid to the NCAA Tournament – fifth most in NCAA history – after securing the ACC's automatic bid following a 73-62 victory over Louisville in the ACC Tournament championship game on Saturday, March 15.
Head coach
Jon Scheyer leads Duke into the tournament for the third straight season and has steered the Blue Devils to a top-five seed in each of his first three seasons at the helm of the program. 2025 marks the first one seed for the Blue Devils under Scheyer and is the 15th time in program history that Duke has been tapped as a one seed. Duke has been ranked inside the top-10 for all but two weeks this season, and enters the tournament ranked No. 1 in the country with a 31-3 record, having swept the ACC regular season and tournament titles.
Duke is 122-41 (.748) all-time in the NCAA Tournament, marking the best winning percentage in tournament history by a team with a minimum of 20 games played. Duke's 122 wins are third-most in the event's history.
American (22-12) defeated Navy to win the Patriot League Tournament championship on March 12. The Blue Devils and Eagles have never met on the hardwood. Duke dropped its only NCAA Tournament game against a Patriot League foe, when Lehigh advanced in the 2012 South Regional in Greensboro. American topped the Patriot League and ranked 50th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 67.3 points per game.
Mount St. Mary's (22-12) knocked off Iona to capture the program's first MAAC Tournament title on Saturday. This would be the first meeting between Duke and the Mountaineers, but the second matchup for the Blue Devils against a team from the MAAC. Duke defeated Iona in the first round of the 2018 postseason in Pittsburgh. Mount St. Mary's leads the MAAC and is 32nd in the nation in field goal percentage defense, limiting its opposition to 40.6% shooting.
The Blue Devils have now been selected to the East Region 20 times – last in 2023 – and hold a 59-17 (.776) record when playing out of the East. Duke is 54-10 (.844) all-time as a No. 1 seed and is 14-0 all-time versus a No. 16 seed.
Duke's game on Friday in Raleigh marks the program's 41st NCAA Tournament game in the state of North Carolina, with a record of 34-6 (.850). The Blue Devils are 12-9 all-time at the Lenovo Center, including a 2-1 record during the NCAA Tournament.
The winner of Friday's first-round game advances to play the winner of No. 8-seed Mississippi State versus No. 9-seed Baylor on Sunday. The East Regional semifinal and final will be played at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on March 27-29.
