All-America Alum Garrett Johns Claims ITF Title in Palm Coast

DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke men's tennis All-America Garrett Johns secured his sixth career ITF Men's World Tennis Tour title over the weekend in Palm Coast, Fla. The Blue Devil standout battled through a hard-fought final match against fifth-seeded Sebastian Gima, but clinched the title with a three-set win, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-2.
Johns, the tournament's No. 2 seed, opened play with a straight-set victory over Victor Lilov in the first round, winning 6-2, 7-6 (4). In the second round, he dominated Blu Baker with a 6-2, 6-2 result to advance to the quarterfinals.
Facing Miles Jones in the quarterfinals, Johns posted another straight-set win. He took the opening set in a competitive 7-5 battle before blanking Jones in the second, 6-0. In the semifinals, he squared off against sixth-seeded Marlon Vankan, taking the first set 6-3 before dropping the second, 1-6. Johns responded with another strong third set, closing out the match with a 6-3 win to book his spot in the championship round, where he would claim the title.
Duke men's tennis, currently undefeated and ranked No. 7 nationally, returns to action Feb. 14-17, traveling to Waco, Texas, for the ITA National Team Indoors. Tournament draws have yet to be announced.
