DURHAM, N.C. – Duke tennis All-America alum
Garrett Johns clinched his seventh ITF Men's World Tennis Tour career title at the M15 in Naples, Fla., held Feb. 11-16. In the tournament final, Johns faced seventh-seeded Lorenzo Joaquin Rodriguez, securing the championship with a straight-set victory (6-4, 6-4). In the last three weeks, Johns has played some of his best professional tennis, claiming 14 of his last 15 matches.
Johns, the tournament's eighth seed, opened his campaign against Tristan McCormick in the first round. He dropped the first set 4-6 but fought back to claim the next two, sealing the match in a decisive tiebreak (6-3, 7-6(1)). In the second round, he posted a straight-set victory over Louis Tessa (6-2, 6-2).
In the quarterfinals, Johns upset third-seeded Patrick Maloney with another straight-set win (6-4, 6-2). He carried that momentum into the semifinal, where he posted a win over No. 2 seed Tommaso Compagnucci. Compagnucci claimed the first set in a tight tiebreak (7-6(6)), but Johns responded with a 6-4 win in the second set and dominated the third set 6-0 to punch his ticket to the final, where he went on to claim the title.
Duke men's tennis is set to host Virginia in its ACC opener on Friday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. The match will be streamed live on PlaySight.
