No. 7 Duke Drops Match to Baylor at ITA National Indoor Championships

WACO, Texas – No. 7 Duke men's tennis fell 4-2 to the Baylor Bears on Saturday night in the consolation round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Jim and Nell Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center.

Duke started the match up 2-0, as the Blue Devils clinched the doubles point and junior Pedro Rodenas posted a win in his singles match in straight sets. However, Baylor responded by winning four consecutive singles matches on courts one, two, four and five to secure the victory.

How It Happened

Duke secured the doubles point, taking the 1-0 lead in the match.
On court one in doubles play, Rodenas and graduate student Theo Winegar clinched the first doubles game 6-4. On court three, the Bears clinched a doubles match in a tiebreaker, 7-6(2). However, the Blue Devils' senior Connor Krug and junior Teddy Truwit came back from a 1-4 deficit pushing the set to a tiebreak, where they won 7-6(2), clinching the doubles point for the Blue Devils.
To give Duke the 2-0 lead, Rodenas won his match on court two in straight sets (6-2, 6-4).
On court three, Baylor made it 2-1 by defeating graduate student Andreja Petrovic in straight sets. Petrovic led for most of the second set, but Bears' No. 64 Zsombor Velcz came back to clinch the match.
Baylor tied the match 2-2 after No. 37 Devin Badenhorst beat No. 58 sophomore Cooper Williams in straight sets, decided by a tiebreak (6-4, 7-6(4)).
Baylor took a 3-2 lead with a win on court four. Iona Alexandru Chirita from Baylor won the first set 6-2 and was leading the second 2-0 before Connor Krug rallied back into the match to win the second 6-4. Chirita closed out the match with a 6-2 third set.
The match was decided when Louis Bowden from Baylor beat junior Gerard Planelles Ripoll on court five in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-4).
