BLACKSBURG, Va. – Duke senior
Taina Mair and sophomore
Toby Fournier combined for 36 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils to a 70-54 victory at Virginia Tech in ACC women's basketball action Sunday afternoon.
Mair finished her afternoon with 17 points, five rebounds and matched a season-best six steals, while Fournier registered 19 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to lead the charge for Duke on both ends of the floor.
The Blue Devils' defense held Virginia Tech to multiple season-low marks, including 54 total points, nine assists, 17 made field goals and .266 shooting from the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Duke scored the first four points of the game with Jackson and Fournier getting early layups. Fournier added a free throw and Jordan Wood got the putback from a missed free throw to give the Blue Devils the early 7-2 lead.
- Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch in the opening minutes as Duke headed into the first media timeout with a 9-6 lead. The Blue Devils held the Hokies to two field goals in the first six minutes while forcing three turnovers.
- Virginia Tech came out of the timeout and scored the first four points to take the lead for the first time of the afternoon, 10-9. The Blue Devils answered right back with a trifecta from Mair and a drive through the lane to the basket by Jackson for the 14-10 lead.
- Kayl Peterson hit the offensive boards for Virginia Tech and finished off the second chance to make it a 14-12 contest in favor of the Blue Devils after 10 minutes of action. Turnovers plagued the Blue Devils in the opening quarter as Duke gave away the ball eight times leading to 10 Hokie points.
- The Blue Devils and Hokies traded baskets early in the third period before Wood knocked down a baseline jumper and Jackson hit her first three of the afternoon to give Duke its biggest lead of the day, 25-18, and forcing Virginia Tech into a timeout.
- Virginia Tech continued to battle, but the Blue Devils always had an answer, securing seven of the final nine points of the frame for a 34-26 halftime edge.
- Balanced scoring and quality rebounding in the third quarter allowed the Blue Devils to extend their lead to 15, 52-37, with two minutes remaining in the stanza.
- Fournier tacked on four more points in the final 75 seconds to send Duke into the fourth quarter with a 56-41 lead. The sophomore posted eight points and five rebounds in the 10 minutes while Mair added six points. The Blue Devils outrebounded the Hokies 13-3 in the quarter, getting seven second-chance points.
- The Blue Devils kept their foot on the gas in the fourth, keeping the Hokies off the scoreboard for the first 5:05 en route to stretching the lead to 21 on a strike from downtown by Jackson.
- Virginia Tech refused to go away, scoring six straight points to cut Duke's advantage to 15 points with 2:44 remaining.
- Fournier hit two free throws to stop the Virginia Tech run as Duke closed out the final 90 second for the 70-54 victory.
- Carleigh Wenzel led all Hokie scorers with 15 points as Duke held the sharpshooter to just 4-of-17 from the field.
