DURHAM, N.C.—The new year of 2025 began with another unforgettable trip to The Ocean Reef Club. We arrived on January 2 and were stoked to be back together as a team and ready for preseason. Those of us who were on the team last year were happy to be back for another trip and those of us who are new were excited to experience it for the first time.
Upon arriving at Ocean Reef, we went to the courts for a light hit to get moving a little after our travels. After, we went to a private bonfire hosted by Ocean Reef for dinner. The food consisted of a variety of items including make your own burgers, ribs, potato salad and an assortment of cakes and cookies. After dinner, we had a team cornhole competition where teams of players and coaches were pitted against each other in search of the coveted Ocean Reef Cup. After some intense matchups, our assistant coaches Danny and G came out victorious. To wrap up the night, we all sat around the bonfire and shared some laughs while answering some team-bonding questions.
The next day, we had some free time in the morning and decided to spend it at the pool. Ocean Reef has a beautiful pool/beach area where you can hang out on the lounge chairs or swim in the pool. After, we had practice and then played in a pro-am with the members which was a lot of fun. It was great to see some familiar faces from last year and meet new members as well. We finished up the night hanging out at the ice cream store, overlooking the marina.
Saturday started with a boat trip to a nearby island called Gilbert's Island. We were split into three boats for our trip. Our captain, Deb, was amazing. She told us about the various houses we passed, including one that is allegedly haunted, and stories about some of the famous owners. She also pointed out cool birds and fish that we passed. Once on the island, we had lunch at Gilbert's resort and hung out for a bit. Finally, we boated back to Ocean Reef through the mangroves. When we got back, we went to practice and played a few exhibition matches for the members. Shavit and Emma took on Liv and Ellie in the first doubles match. Then, Liv and Ava took on Katie and Shavit in the second doubles match. We had fun interacting with the members and competing against each other to prepare for our upcoming matches.
We had Sunday morning off to explore and enjoy the island. Most of us took the golf carts around the island and checked out the views. No matter where you are on the island there is always a view of the water or golf courses. Later, we had practice and participated in a member clinic. The team was split so there were 1-2 members on each court. The Ocean Reef staff ran drills and games for three rotations. We had a blast playing with the members and getting to know the community better. Finally, to end the night, we had a team dinner at a restaurant on the island.
On our last full day on the reef and my personal favorite day, we had an optional team practice in the morning. In the afternoon, Ava, Eleana, Shavit, Ellie, and I went snorkeling at a lighthouse about 20 minutes off the coast. We had a blast snorkeling around, taking photos, and seeing all the cool fish and coral that Ocean Reef has to offer. Ellie and I chased a puffer fish around for a bit too. When we returned, we went to the hot tub for a bit to warm back up and watch the sunset. For dinner, we participated in a cooking class run by the Ocean Reef staff. We split into teams and turned it into a competition. The first team was Danny, Jamie, G, and Tara. The second team was Ellie, Emma, Liv, and I. And the third team was Shavit, Irina, Ava and Eleana. For the first course, we made a watermelon salad with avocado, goat cheese, arugula, and pumpkin seeds. Our main course was a filet mignon with a peppercorn sauce and mixed vegetables. Dessert was a mango pudding that we all enjoyed very much. We had a blast cooking together and creating our own dishes. A winning team was never ultimately decided, but everyone had a great time.
The last day we had the morning off. We had a team breakfast and then packed and got ready to say goodbye to Ocean Reef. We were very grateful to the tennis center staff and members for supporting us throughout the week. This was a great way to kick off our season and we had a lot of fun together as a team. We were sad to leave but excited to get back to campus and begin our season. We are super thankful for everyone at Ocean Reef who supported us and made our time so enjoyable. We will remember this trip for a lifetime.
See you Saturday inside the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center as we take on James Madison at 11 a.m.!
