DURHAM, N.C. – Duke will serve as one of 14 host sites for the ITA Kickoff Weekend Saturday and Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils, ranked No. 11 in this week's poll, will look to return to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with a pair of wins this weekend.Â
The Blue Devils open the weekend versus Old Dominion at 12 noon Saturday while Cornell and Vanderbilt face each other at 4 p.m.Â
The winners of the Saturday contests play Sunday to determine which squad will receive a bid to the indoor championships, February 14-18 in Dallas and Waco, Texas, at the Altec Tennis Complex and Jim and Nell Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, respectively.
Old Dominion Series History
The Blue Devils own a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series, which began in 1982. Duke won matches in 1982 and 1984 before a two-decade break in the series. The two programs met annually in January from 2005-07 with Duke claiming all three wins in Durham. The last meeting was a 5-2 Blue Devil triumph on January 24, 2007.Â
Scouting the Monarchs
The Monarchs own a 2-1 dual match record and bring two ranked singles individuals to Durham with Connor Van Schalkwyk checking in at No. 70 and Cosme Rolland De Ravel at No. 88. Van Schalkwyk is off to a 1-2 start on court one this winter with Rolland De Ravel posting a 2-1 mark on court two. ODU also features three ranked doubles teams with Rolland De Ravel and Adam Majchrzak (No. 41), Connor Van Schalkwyk and Codie Van Schalkwyk (No. 56) and Yanis Moundir and Thomas Nelson (No. 95).
Cornell Series History
This would be the sixth meeting between the two with Duke holding a 3-2 lead in the all-time series. The teams had not met since 1984 before facing each other in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Championships with Duke claiming a 4-1 victory. In that match, current Blue DevilsÂ
Pedro Rodenas,Â
Connor Krug andÂ
Teddy Truwit competed, with Rodenas winning in doubles on court one and in singles on court two.
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell enters the weekend 1-1 after defeating Tulsa 4-0 and falling to Oklahoma 4-1. Senior Radu Papoe is the top ranked individual at No. 23. He is 2-0 this spring with his biggest win against No. 62 Luis Alvarez of Oklahoma. The Big Red also bring two ranked doubles squads to the kickoff weekend with Rushil Khosla and Eric Verdes at No. 61 and Papoe and Rodrigo Fernandes at No. 109.Â
Vanderbilt Series History
The two programs have met just four times, and only twice since 1980, as the Commodores own a 3-1 advantage. Duke suffered a 5-4 loss in the initial match, in 1979 in Nashville, Tenn., and an 8-1 setback in 1980 in Durham. In one of the most recent contests, at the 2004 National Team Indoors in Seattle, the Blue Devils claimed a 4-1 victory. The two also met in Nashville in 2016 with the Commodores earning a 5-2 triumph.Â
Scouting the Commodores
Vanderbilt comes in with a 2-1 record, having defeated Alabama A&M (5-0) and Tennessee Tech (7-0) in Nashville and having lost at Michigan State (5-2). The Commodores' lone ranked individual is No. 100 Nathan Cox. Vanderbilt does not have a ranked doubles squad. On Sunday at Michigan State, the Commodores claimed the doubles point, but the Spartans raced off the courts with five straight singles wins to secure the match.
Duke in ITA Kickoff Weekends
Saturday will mark the eighth time for Duke hosting an ITA Kickoff Weekend and the second in as many seasons. Of the seven previous times hosting, the Blue Devils have swept the competition to advance to the ITA National Team Indoors six times. The lone exception was in 2016, when the Duke fell 4-2 to San Diego.Â
Last Time Out
The Duke men's tennis team opened the dual match season with a pair of victories, topping No. 21 Harvard 4-3 and downing N.C. Central 6-1 on Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devils trailed Harvard 1-0 after doubles but quickly made it 1-1 with a straight-set win on court six by graduateÂ
Remy Dugardin. The squads split the next four singles matches to sit at 3-3 overall with all attention turning to court five. SeniorÂ
Connor Krug earned a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Masato Perera for the clinching point. Krug battled back from a 3-1 hole in the third set to win five of the last six games and clinch for the Blue Devils. FreshmanÂ
Saahith Jayaraman clinched the nightcap versus N.C. Central in his Duke debut.Â
A Balanced Attack
No Blue Devil won two singles matches during the opening weekend, but Duke registered nine singles wins. Dugardin, Jayaraman, graduateÂ
Andreja Petrovic and graduateÂ
Theo Winegar all recorded the first dual match singles wins of their Duke careers. Petrovic spent his last three seasons at Florida State while Winegar arrived in Durham after four years on the Columbia squad.Â
Strong at No. 5 and No. 6
Four Blue Devils occupied courts five and six last weekend and went a combined 4-0. Dugardin and Winegar picked up wins on court six while Krug clinched and Truwit triumphed on court five. Since the beginning of the 2022 spring campaign, court six has been a spot of strength for the Blue Devils, posting a 49-25 (.662 winning percentage) record.
Blue Devils in the ITA Rankings
Duke rose one spot to No. 11 in the latest ITA team rankings. With the next singles and doubles rankings due February 5, the Blue Devils keep three singles players and two doubles pairs in the ledger. JuniorÂ
Sam Landau stands No. 37 in singles with Rodenas, also a junior, right behind at No. 38. SophomoreÂ
Cooper Williams rounds out the trio at No. 47. The doubles duo of Williams and Winegar is the highest of the Blue Devil bunch at No. 12. Landau and Petrovic stand at No. 33 while Rodenas and juniorÂ
Gerard Planelles Ripoll are No. 49.Â
