DURHAM, N.C.-- In light of our new partnership with the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center at the Duke Children's Hospital, we had the privilege of visiting the hospital with the men's team in October. This experience was eye-opening for all of us and we are thrilled to be able to play a small part in helping these kids through the Big Sets for Little Hearts program.
Â
Dr. Turek and his team took the time to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center. We first saw the echocardiogram lab, where we learned about some of the common heart disorders that are treated at the Heart Center and got to try out our echo skills. Katie [Codd] proved to be the best echo technician on the team. We were then shown around the pediatric cardiac ICU which was a deeply impactful experience. We saw kids and families who were fighting the most challenging battles one can face. This was when we truly understood the significance of our partnership with the Heart Center. As student-athletes, we have many people who have supported us to get to where we are. We are now grateful to be able to use our sport to give back to others.
Â
To finish the day, we were shown a mock operating room and a live operation. In the mock OR we were able to see common instruments used in the heart surgeries as well as meet many of the doctors and nurses that would be involved in such an operation. In small groups, we were taken to briefly watch a live operation. This was the most memorable part of the day for me. It was the culmination of everything we had seen to that point, highlighting the groundbreaking work being done by the cardiac team.
Â
We are all very thankful to Dr. Turek and his team for having us and cultivating a partnership that will help countless kids to come. Seeing the courageous patients who are treated here and the work that the cardiac team does every day really put into perspective how impactful this program will be and how many families it can help. As we head into our season, we are inspired by these kids and their fight. Each match we are playing for something bigger than ourselves and hope to make the greatest positive impact possible.
