CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Duke freshman guard/forward
Cooper Flagg swept the ACC Men's Basketball weekly awards after earning ACC Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors, the conference announced on Monday, Jan. 13.
The sweep is Flagg's second in as many weeks and third total for the 2024-25 season, making the freshman the first in ACC history to accomplish the feat three times in a season. Sweeping the player and rookie of the week awards has been accomplished a total of 19 times by 13 players, including 14 times by eight Blue Devils.
During Duke's 2-0 week, the 6-9 freshman averaged 30.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.0 blocked shot per contest, while shooting 18-of-25 (.720) from the field, 5-of-8 (.625) from behind the arc and 20-of-23 (.870) from the free-throw line.Â
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Flagg registered his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two blocked shots and a steal during a 76-47 triumph over Pittsburgh. He broke the Duke and ACC freshman scoring records with 42 points against Notre Dame on Saturday, Jan. 11, while adding seven assists, six rebounds and a steal in an 86-78 victory. He shot 11-of-14 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range, and connected on 16-of-17 free throws.
Flagg became the first Blue Devil to reach the 40-point threshold since
JJ Redick did so against Virginia on Jan. 28, 2006, and the 42 total points scored by Flagg are the most by a Duke player since
Danny Ferry scored 58 at Miami on Dec. 10, 1988. With his performance, Flagg is just one of three Blue Devils to score at least 42 on Duke's home floor, joining
Tate Armstrong (1975-76) and
Dick Groat (1951-52, twice).
The Newport, Maine native joins only Redick as Duke players to score at least 40 points while attempting 14 or fewer field goals, and Flagg's 16 made free throws set a new Duke freshman record, surpassing
Wendell Moore Jr.'s previous benchmark of 15 at Wake Forest on Feb. 25, 2020.
Flagg also garnered national recognition, earning nods from CollegeInsider (Lute Olson National Player of the Week), U.S. Basketball Writers Association (Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week), the Associated Press (AP National Player of the Week) and the Naismith Awards (Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy Player of the Week).
Over the last 11 seasons (since the start of 2013-14), Duke has had an ACC Rookie of the Week in 92 of a possible 196 weeks (46.9%). Twenty-six different Blue Devils have won the award at least once in that time. The Blue Devils have now had an ACC Player of the Week 150 total times, second most in the league, trailing only North Carolina (157).
Flagg has been named ACC Rookie of the Week in six of the first 10 possible weeks to go alongside his three Player of the Week recognitions.Â
No. 4 Duke (14-2, 6-0 ACC) returns to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Tuesday, Jan. 14, for a late-night matchup against Miami (4-12, 0-5 ACC). Tipoff is scheduled for 9 p.m., and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
