Carter Collects NFF University Scholar-Athlete Award

DURHAM – Former Duke letterman DeWayne Carter was named the recipient of the University Scholar-Athlete Award by the National Football Foundation's Bill Dooley Chapter on Monday.

Carter, a defensive tackle from Pickerington, Ohio, became Duke's first three-time team captain in program history. He earned two-time All-America honors and three-time All-ACC recognition during his Blue Devil tenure and was named a NFF Scholar-Athlete, the recipient of the ACC's Jim Tatum Award, and was a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. In 52 career games with 39 starts, Carter compiled 127 tackles, 25.0 tackles for loss, 12.0 sacks, seven caused fumbles, four fumble recoveries, 15 quarterback pressures, 11 pass breakups and one blocked kick. He started 38 consecutive contests at defensive tackle to close his career and finished his tenure registering one-plus tackle in 36 of his final 39 games played. He graduated in May 2023, with a psychology degree, with minors in education and theater studies. This past April, the Buffalo Bills selected Carter in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Other 2024 University Scholar Athlete award recipients for the Bill Dooley Triangle East Chapter of North Carolina included Anthony Carter Jr. of NC State, Rahjai Harris of East Carolina, Christopher Holliday of North Carolina, and Juan Velarde of NC Central.
