How It Happened
- As a team, Clemson opened the morning action with an 8-under, 280, and leads the field.Texas A&M (281), Stanford (285), Auburn (285), Northwestern (285), San Jose State (286), Duke (286) and Arizona State (286) round out the top six.
- Duke opened action on hole No. 10 at 12:55 p.m., local time (3:55 p.m. ET).
- Going off first for the Blue Devils, Phoebe Brinker jumped out to a tremendous start with birdies on her first two holes. She rolled in a 20-footer on the par-5 10th hole and then hit her 50-degree wedge from 105 yards to seven feet for birdie on No. 11.Then after waiting for a little while for the group ahead of hers to finish on No. 12, Brinker went on the miss each of the next two greens and drop a pair of shots.A product of Wilmington, Del., Brinker regrouped and went on a string where she birdied three out of five holes. She rolled in a 6-footer for birdie on No. 17, hit her 9-iron from 140 yards to two feet for birdie on No. 1 and stuck her 7-iron from 155 yards to six feet on No. 3 for birdie to move to 3-under.Brinker missed the 17th green and suffered a bogey, but closed strong with a 15-foot birdie on her final hole, the 364-yard, par-4 No. 9, to close the day with a 3-under, 69.She hit 13 greens, 13 fairways and tied a season low with 28 putts.
- In her first NCAA Championship appearance, Emma McMyler shook off a few early nerves after bogeying No. 10 and No. 13 to drop to 2-over.Following back-to-back pars, McMyler hit her pitching wedge from 136 yards to 11 feet on the par-3 16th.She rolled in one of only four birdies on the hole all day.McMyler, who is from San Antonio, Texas, kept her putter working on the next hole as she sank a 15-footer for birdie to get back to even par for the afternoon. She got stuck in a fairway bunker on No. 1 and missed the green, which led to just her third bogey.McMyler once again responded in a big way with two consecutive birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 to get to 1-under.She drained a 9-footer birdie on No. 2 and then hit her 7-iron from 154 yards to five feet for birdie on No. 3.McMyler parred the final six holes to finish with a 71.She hit 12 greens, 11 fairways and rolled 29 putts.
- Both freshman Katie Li and senior Anne Chen turned in a 1-over, 73, in the opening round.
- Li, who was also making her NCAA Championship debut, was scrambling early after bogeying her first hole. She was able to get up-and-down on No. 13 and then registered sand saves for par on No. 15 and No. 16 to remain at 1-over.Li, a native of Basking Ridge, N.J., bogeyed No. 17 and then parred seven straight holes. She connected on her lone birdie of the afternoon on the 430-yard, par-4 seventh as she hit her pitching wedge from 130 yards to 14 feet.Li hit 13 greens, 12 fairways and had 32 putts on Friday.
- Chen parred the first two holes and then suffered a double-bogey.She came back to turn in a terrific birdie on the 396-yard, par-4 13th.Chen, who hails from Sugar Land, Texas, found herself in the fairway bunker off the tee, but hit her approach to 20 feet. She rolled in her first of three birdies on the day.Chen then hit her 54-degree wedge from 96 yards on No. 17 to 12 feet for birdie to return to even par.She suffered a bogey on No. 2, but came back to drain a 35-foot putt from off the green on No. 3 to once again get back to even.Chen had five pars and a bogey on No. 6 to close the day with a 73.She had 29 putts, 11 greens and 10 fairways.
- Sophomore Andie Smith held an even-par score through 10 holes, but struggled on the way in to finish with a 77. Smith, a product of Hobe Sound, Fla., notched two birdies on the day on No. 14 as she rolled in a 7-foot putt and on No. 1 as she hit a solid shot out of the fairway bunker from 111 yards to four feet with her pitching wedge.

Quotes
- "The conditions were playing pretty tough. The course isn't easy. You have to really pick apart the tee shots and figure out what clubs you want to hit off the tee. I played a solid round. I didn't quite have the best start, but I knew if I stayed patient, there'd be some birdies out there.I was able to roll in a few putts coming in. So, overall it was a good day."-- Duke graduate student Emma McMyler
- "I was really in a flow today.I felt really, really focused.I hit a lot of fairways and greens.I was rolling the ball really well. I missed a couple of birdie putts, but overall it was a low stress kind of day."-- Duke senior Phoebe Brinker
