CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball announced the 2024 Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List on Thursday, continuing the process of identifying the best amateur baseball player in the country. The list features 45 of the nation's top athletes from college and high school baseball.
Duke is joined by Florida State, Texas A&M, East Carolina, Florida, LSU and Tennessee as the seven programs in the country with multiple representatives on the list. The ACC is second behind the SEC boasting 12 representatives this season.
"We are honored to acknowledge the top forty-five amateur players in the nation for their stellar performances so far this season," said USA Baseball CEO/Executive Director Paul Seiler. "There is unbelievable talent up and down the entire amateur baseball landscape, and the players on this list represent the best of the best. We look forward to watching the rest of the season unfold as we move closer to naming the 46th winner of the prestigious Golden Spikes Award."
Junior left-handed pitcher
Jonathan Santucci and graduate third baseman
Ben Miller were a part of 27 athletes who played their way onto the list since the announcement of the Preseason Watch List on February 9. The duo become the second and third Duke players named to the midseason watch list since
Marcus Stroman in 2012.
Santucci, a 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher, has started seven games for the Blue Devils as the Friday night ace. He has posted a 5-0 record on the mound in 35 innings of work, allowing 11 earned runs to score and punched out 57 batters. The Leominster, Mass., native has held opponents to a .163 average at the plate and posted a new career high in both innings pitched (six) and strikeouts (14) against Akron in his third start of the year. That performance earned Santucci Duke's first ACC Pitcher of the Week award since
Bryce Jarvis threw the Blue Devils first perfect game.
Miller, a 6-foot-1 third baseman, has started all 29 games for the Blue Devils this season, leading the team in batting average (.458), doubles (14), OPS (1.334), hits (54), slugging percentage (.805) and on base percentage (.529). The Durham, N.C., native has also added 11 walks and seven hit by pitches, beginning the season with a 13-game hitting streak. He enters the fifth weekend of ACC play with a 10-game hitting streak and tallied his 18th multi-hit contest of the season at Liberty on Tuesday.
