DURHAM, N.C. - Duke men's basketball head coach
Jon Scheyer officially announced the addition of
Mason Gillis to the Blue Devils' 2024 recruiting class on Friday.
Â
Gillis, a 6-6, 225-pound forward from New Castle, Indiana, transfers to Duke after playing the last four seasons at Purdue. He appeared in 132 career games with 63 starts, averaging more than 20 minutes per contest each year and amassing 827 points (6.3 ppg), 548 rebounds (4.2 rpg) and 179 assists (1.4 apg).
Â
Named this past season's Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year, Gillis averaged 6.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest in 2023-24, while playing all 39 games for the Boilermakers, who advanced to the national championship game. He shot 46.8% (58-of-124) from long distance, ranking sixth nationally in 3-point percentage among players that made at least 50 triples, and connected on 86.0% from the free-throw line. The senior owned a 2.06 assist-to-turnover ratio (66/32) and ranked sixth in the nation with an offensive rating of 134.8, according to KenPom.com.
Â
"We can't wait for Mason Gillis to arrive on campus," said Scheyer. "Mason will be among the most experienced players in the country next year, having spent five years at Purdue and winning over 100 games. He is also one of the best shooters in the nation, shooting 47% from three-point range last season. Mason is all about winning and doing whatever his team needs. He brings an incredible competitiveness and toughness to our program, and his leadership will have a big impact on our team."
Â
During his four campaigns at Purdue, Gillis played in 11 NCAA Tournament games, including five starts. He is a three-time Big Ten All-Academic Team honoree and earned his bachelor's degree in three-and-a-half years.
Â
Prior to Purdue, Gillis was a four-star recruit coming out of New Castle High School, where he averaged 21.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game as a junior, helping New Castle to a Class 3A Regional title. He was also one of the top baseball players in Indiana, before focusing his efforts on basketball.
Â
Gillis adds to Duke's top-ranked recruiting class, joining fellow transfer
