CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A conference-high eight Duke men's basketball student-athletes have been named to the 2023-24 All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball Team, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Thursday.
Â
Representing the Blue Devils on this year's All-ACC Academic Team are two-time honorees junior
Jaylen Blakes, sophomore
Kyle Filipowski and graduate student
Ryan Young, along with sophomore
Tyrese Proctor and freshmen
Caleb Foster,
Jared McCain,
TJ Power and
Sean Stewart.
Â
This marks the 30th consecutive season Duke has had at least one selection to the All-ACC Academic Team. The eight honorees are more than any other ACC men's basketball program in 2023-24, and the most for any Duke men's basketball season, dating back to 1963. The Blue Devils now boast 113 all-time All-ACC Academic picks.
Â
Blakes, who is earning a bachelor's degree in just three years, averaged nearly 10 minutes of action in 31 games this season, recording 57 points, 26 rebounds, 21 steals, 13 assists and five blocked shots. He scored a season-high 15 points versus Charlotte (Dec. 9) with a perfect shooting performance of 5-for-5 from the field, including three 3-pointers. He demonstrated his defensive prowess with a career-best three steals on three occasions, most notably in pivotal moments of a win over Syracuse (Jan. 2) and in a victory over Vermont (March 22) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Filipowski is the lone academic honoree who also garnered First-Team All-ACC recognition this season. The sophomore center started all 36 games this season, while averaging team-highs of 16.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.1 steals per outing, while also distributing 2.8 assists per contest and shooting 50.5% from the field. He amassed a career-high 30 points with 13 boards, four assists, two blocked shots and two steals without committing a turnover versus Georgia Tech (Jan. 13), becoming the first Duke player with a 30-point double-double and no turnovers in the past 40 seasons. Filipowski became the 69th Blue Devil all-time to reach 1,000 points, and only the seventh Blue Devil in the past 50 years to score 1,000 career points in their first two seasons. He earned consensus Second Team All-America honors, with citations from the Associated Press (AP), U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
Â
Young appeared in all 36 games this season with two starts, averaging 2.8 points and 3.4 rebounds in 11.8 minutes per contest. The team captain registered a season-best 10 points twice, including a 10-point, nine-rebound performance against Georgia Tech (Jan. 13). He scored eight points, grabbed seven boards and finished with a game-high plus-minus of +24 in a win over No. 18 Michigan State (Nov. 14). During Duke's Sweet 16 victory over No. 1-seed Houston, Young achieved a remarkable plus-minus of +18 in just 23 minutes off the bench.
Â
Proctor led the Blue Devils with 118 assists and ranked 25th nationally in assist/turnover ratio (2.95). During his final 11 outings of the season, he distributed 45 assists with just 12 turnovers. The team captain amassed a career-high 24 points with four 3-pointers in a win at Louisville (Jan. 23), calmly drained a pair of game-winning free throws with one second remaining versus Clemson (Jan. 27), and tallied a career-best three steals with critical defensive stops down the stretch of Duke's Sweet 16 triumph over No. 1-seed Houston.
Â
Foster, who missed the final nine games of the campaign due to injury, played in 27 contests with 15 starts, averaging 7.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 25.4 minutes per appearance. The freshman guard scored a season-high 18 points with four 3-pointers against No. 18 Michigan State (Nov. 14), handed out a season-best seven assists at Pittsburgh (Jan. 9), and collected 16 points with season-highs of six rebounds and three steals in a rematch with the Panthers (Jan. 20).
Â
McCain, who claimed All-ACC honorable mention and was a member of the ACC All-Rookie Team, started in all 36 games, averaging 14.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest. The freshman sharp-shooter connected on a team-best 87 shots from long distance and broke the Duke record for most 3-pointers made in an NCAA Tournament game with eight against James Madison (March 24). He scored a career-high 35 points in a win at Florida State (Feb. 17), matching the Duke freshman scoring record and marking the sixth most points scored by a freshman in ACC history.
Â
Power appeared in 26 games during his freshman campaign, averaging 2.1 points in just seven minutes per outing with 15 made 3-pointers. He scored a season-best nine points on three 3-point baskets in six minutes of action versus La Salle (Nov. 21).
Stewart played 33 games with an average of 2.6 points and 3.2 rebounds in 8.3 minutes per contest. The high-flying freshman forward also contributed 17 steals and 16 rejections, while shooting 57.1% from the field. He recorded a double-double with season-highs of 16 points and 10 boards in 18 minutes versus La Salle (Nov. 21), and scored 12 points with a season-best three blocked shots at NC State (March 4).
Â
Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team's contests.
