DURHAM – Duke men's basketball standout
Kyle Filipowski is a consensus Second Team All-American, as the Associated Press (AP), U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced their respective teams this week. Filipowski is the only underclassman on each of the three, 15-player, All-America teams and the first Duke consensus Second Team All-American since
Paolo Banchero in 2022.
The Westtown, New York native also earned First Team All-District recognition from the NABC, his second consecutive season doing so – the first Blue Devil to bring in back-to-back All-District honors since
Luke Kennard did so in both 2016 and 2017. With his All-District honor, Duke extends its streak to 17 consecutive seasons with at least one All-District selection.
Filipowski was named a preseason AP All-American ahead of the season and makes the AP Second Team alongside Mark Sears (Alabama), DaRon Holmes II (Dayton), Hunter Dickinson (Kansas) and Tyler Kolek (Marquette).
The 7-footer returned to Duke for his sophomore season following an ACC Rookie of the Year campaign in 2022-23 and is on pace to improve in nearly all statistical categories – most notably in in blocks and assists. Filipowski has blocked 50 shots after swatting a total of 26 attempts during his freshman year and with a new attention given to Filipowski on the offensive end of the floor, he has distributed three-plus assists in 16 games this season after doing so just five times as a freshman.
Filipowski has scored at least 20 points in 12 games so far this season, including a career-high 30 points versus Georgia Tech on Jan. 30, after reaching 20 points six times in his first season at Duke. He has tallied nine double-doubles so far during the 2023-24 season, upping his career total to 25 in 68 games played. Filipowski became the 69th Blue Devil all-time to reach 1,000 points earlier this season and only the seventh Duke player in the past 50 years to score 1,000 points in their first two seasons.
In addition to his All-America honors, Filipowski is also on the Wooden Award National Ballot and is a finalist for both the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and Lute Olson National Player of the Year.
