TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Duke women's golf team along with freshman
Katie Li turned in a record-breaking day on Friday as the Blue Devils and Li jumped out to leads on both the team and individual leaderboards at the Florida State Match Up, which is being contested at the 6,250-yard, par-72 Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Blue Devils carded a school-record 31-under-par, 545, over the first 36 holes on a par-72 course to lead host Florida State (559) by 14 strokes. Duke's second round of 24-under, 264, was the third-lowest 18-hole score in NCAA history. The Blue Devils collected a season-high 31 birdies in the second round and have shot a tournament-best 26-under on the par-5 holes through the first two rounds.
Li, who hails from Basking Ridge, N.J., posted back-to-back rounds of 66 en route to shooting a school-record 12-under-par, 132, and leads by two strokes. She became the first Duke freshman to card two straight rounds of 66 or better and shot a tournament-best 10-under on par-5 holes.
Duke's four counting scores in the second round all were 4-under or better – Li (6-under, 66),
Anne Chen (7-under, 65),
Andie Smith (7-under, 65) and
Emma McMyler (4-under, 68). The Blue Devils feature four golfers in the top 12 entering the final round – Li (1), Smith (T4), Chen (T6) and McMyler (T12).
How It Happened – Round One
- The Blue Devils opened action with a 7-under-par, 281, in round one and were three shots off the lead held by host Florida State with a 10-under, 278.
- The 281 for Duke was tied for the third-lowest round of the season and the 18 birdies in round one was the most for the Blue Devils this spring.
- Duke was led by freshman Katie Li, who carded a career-best 6-under, 66, which was tied for first along with FSU's Alice Hodge.It was tied for the fourth-lowest 18-hole score by a Blue Devil freshman.She tallied a career-best six birdies and her first collegiate eagle.
- Li opened her day on hole No. 6 and birdied three out of her first four holes to get to 3-under.She posted two birdies, two bogeys and three pars over the next seven holes to remain even.Li closed with five pars, a birdie on No. 2 and an eagle on No. 4 to finish with a career-low, 66.For her eagle, Li hit her 3-hybrid from 211 yards to 15 feet and drained the putt.
- Senior Phoebe Brinker returned to form with a 1-under-par, 71, to open the day.She collected four birdies to reach 301 for her collegiate career.
- Both Emma McMyler and Andie Smith turned in even-par rounds of 72 to open the event.
- McMyler, who is from San Antonio, Texas, posted 14 pars to go along with two birdies and two bogeys for her round.
- A native of Hobe Sound, Fla., Smith started slow with three bogeys over her first five holes, but played her final 13 holes at 3-under-par with four birdies to finish with a 72.
- Senior Anne Chen was even through 13 holes, but suffered back-to-back bogeys on holes No. 1 and No. 2.She added two birdies on the day on holes No. 4 and No. 11 after starting her day on hole No. 6.Chen finished the round with a 1-over, 73.
- Playing as an individual, junior Rylie Heflin carded an even-par, 72, as she notched fourth birdies on the round.Heflin registered birdies on No. 3 and No. 7 to finish her final five holes at 2-under.
How It Happened – Round Two
- Li continued her stellar play in the afternoon as she collected her second straight round of 66 and leads the field with a 12-under, 132.She opened her afternoon on hole No. 6 and notched birdies on No. 6 and No. 8, before moving to 4-under with her second eagle of the day on No. 11.Li was 190 yards out in the fairway and stuck her approach to six feet for eagle.After back-to-back bogeys on No. 12 and No. 13, Li got hot again with birdies on No. 14 and No. 16 to get back to 4-under.She went back to the front nine and birdied No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 to reach 7-under, but bogeyed her final hole, No. 5, to finish with a 66.
- Smith, a sophomore competing in her home state of Florida, closed her afternoon with a bogey-free, career-best 7-under, 65.She started her round on hole five and birdied three of her first seven holes.Smith then collected birdies on No. 16 and No. 18 to get to 5-under.She added two more birdies on No. 1 and No. 4 to finish her afternoon.
- Chen, a product of Sugar Land, Texas, turned in eight birdies, including four on each side as she posted a 7-under, 65.She opened with four birdies over her first six holes and then was 4-under over her final 10 holes to close the day.
- After opening her second round on hole No. 4 with a par, McMyler suffered a double-bogey on No. 5, but registered a birdie on No. 8 and then an eagle on No. 11 to get in the red numbers.She collected her eagle by hitting her 5-iron from 210 yards to six feet and made the eagle.McMyler played her next seven holes at even par, before carding three straight birdies on holes No. 1-3 to finish her day with a 4-under, 68.
- Brinker closed her afternoon with a 5-over, 77 as she totaled three birdies.
- Heflin posted her second straight round of 72 with two birdies, 15 pars and a double-bogey.
Notes
- Florida State decided to play 36 holes on Friday and 18 on Saturday as inclement weather is forecasted on Sunday.
- Duke leads the field with a 31-under, 545, with Florida State (559), Georgia (565), Baylor (567), Alabama (576) and Nebraska (576) rounding out the top five teams.
- Katie Li hit 10 fairways, 15 greens and had 29 putts in round one and then hit 11 fairways, 13 greens and rolled 27 putts in the second round.
- Phoebe Brinker now owns 304 birdies over her Duke career. She became the 12th Blue Devil to reach the 300-birdie mark.
- Andie Smith hit 10 fairways in both rounds, while hitting 15 greens in round one and 13 in round two. She rolled a career-best 25 putts in the second round, while having 33 in round one. Smith added five up-and-downs in her second round.
- Smith shot 5-under on par-5 holes, which is tied for second among the field.
- Anne Chen posted her 10th career round in the 60s. She hit 13 and 16 greens, respectively, in rounds one and two. Chen rolled 28 putts in her 7-under, 65, round.
- Emma McMyler missed only one fairway over her first 36 holes. She hit 13 greens and had 28 putts in her second round.
- With her two even-par rounds on the day, Rylie Heflin now owns 12 rounds of even or under par over her career.She has notched even or under par rounds in five out of her last eight.
- Duke shot a tournament best 6-under on par-4 holes and 26-under on par-5 holes.
- The Blue Devils carded a tournament-best 49 birdies over the first 36 holes.
- Li leads the field with a 12-under, 132, while Kelli Ann Strand of Nebraska is second at 10-under, 134.
