Andrew Zhang secured Friday's 4-1 victory for No. 17 Duke men's tennis over No. 59 Miami at Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Zhang recorded his third match-clinching win after defeating Martin Katz in straight sets on court three. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native now holds a 9-5 dual-match ledger, including an 8-4 mark on court three.
The Blue Devils improve to 12-7 overall and 4-2 in ACC action, while Miami dips to 9-6 and 1-3, respectively.
How It Happened
- The Blue Devils won by forfeit on court three to begin doubles play. Miami then knotted the score at 1-1 following a 6-0 victory by Katz and Antonio Prat over No. 21 Michael Heller and Zhang on court two. With the doubles point coming down to the outcome on court one, No. 29 Garrett Johns and Pedro Rodenas bested No. 46 Vladislav Melnic and Adrien Burdet, 6-4, to register the win.
- Duke extended its edge to 2-0 early in singles play after Jake Krug won by forfeit on court six.
- No. 66 Rodenas then claimed 6-1, 6-2 victories over Melnic on court two to increase the Blue Devils' advantage to 3-0.
- The Hurricanes would earn one back on court five after Sam Baumgartner defeated Alexander Visser 6-3, 6-0.
- Zhang's match was the next to finish on court three. He bested Katz in the opening set 6-3 before recording a 7-6 (5) tiebreak victory in the final frame to secure the win.
- The contests on court one and four went unfinished with both matches in a third set.
Notes
- Zhang earned his third match-clinching win of the season and the 11th of his career.
- Johns and Rodenas continue to roll in doubles action, improving to 11-3 in dual play and 4-1 in the ACC.
Next Match
The Blue Devils travel to face No. 13 Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center. The Seminoles host North Carolina on Friday prior to welcoming Duke on Sunday.
