DURHAM – Duke lacrosse standouts
Maddie Jenner and
Brennan O'Neill were named PNC Achievers of the Year for the 2022-23 campaign and were recognized at the Duke men's basketball game on March 2.
Jenner returned to the draw control circle in 2023 for her final year of eligibility and cemented herself as the best in the sport.
As a starter in all 18 games, Jenner grabbed 187 draws, 29 goals and nine assists for 38 points to rank third on the team. The Annapolis, Md., native tallied five hat tricks and recorded three-or-more points in nine games, including a career-high five against No. 6 North Carolina. She collected nine ground balls and six caused turnovers, proving she's more than just a draw control specialist.
Over the course of her career, Jenner amassed 791 total draws and as the nation's NCAA active career leader in draw controls per game (9.53) and total draw controls (791). She broke the NCAA Division I all-time draw control record in Duke's win over Gardner-Webb on Feb. 19, 2023 in addition to the NCAA single-season draw control record and the Duke program record in 2022 (233). She also reached the 100 point and 100-goal milestones during her final year, adding to her impressive resume.
Currently, Jenner is preparing to apply to medical school and is working in sports medicine research while she coaches lacrosse at Howard University.
O'Neill had one of the best individual seasons in Duke lacrosse history in 2023, winning the Tewaaraton Award as the nation's top player, the Raymond J. Enners National Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year, consensus first-team All-America honors all while leading the Blue Devils to the NCAA title game.
O'Neill followed his outstanding season as a Blue Devil with an incredible performance on the international stage with the USA Lacrosse Men's National Team. The Bay Shore, N.Y., native helped lead the U.S., to the World Lacrosse Championship gold medal, scoring five goals in the gold medal game. He was named the World Lacrosse Championship Most Valuable Player for his tournament performance.
A dual threat at attack for the Blue Devils, O'Neill is on pace to join Justin Guterding as just the second Blue Devil in history to amass 200 goals and 100 assists in his career. He currently ranks fifth on the career points list with 264 points. His 177 career goals rank fifth, while his 87 assists are 12th in program lore.
