INDIANAPOLIS – Duke sophomore center
Kyle Filipowski has been named as one of 40 standout men's college basketball players for the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) 2023-24 Oscar Robertson Trophy and All-America Watch List, the organization announced on Tuesday.
A native of Westtown, New York, Filipowski was named a Preseason All-American and ACC Preseason Player of the Year and has improved in nearly all statistical categories as a sophomore. He has already surpassed his freshman assist total with 76, has blocked 45 shots, nearly double his freshman total, is shooting 49.9 percent from the field and is knocking in 3-pointers at a 34.4 percent clip, all en route to an average of 16.9 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Filipowski scored his 1,000th career point on Feb. 24, becoming the 69th Blue Devil all-time to achieve the milestone and just the 12th Duke player to do so in their first two seasons. He has scored in double-figures in 22 of Duke's 27 games so far this year and tallied eight double-doubles in that span, moving his career double-double total to 24. Alongside his scoring, the 7-footer has demonstrated his passing prowess, tallying at least three assists in 15 games this season after doing so in just five games as a freshman.
Filipowski recorded a career-high 30 points with 13 rebounds against Georgia Tech in mid-January – the first Blue Devil to log a 30-point double-double since
Vernon Carey Jr. tallied 31 and 12 during the 2019-20 campaign. Filipowski also added four assists, two blocks and two steals against the Yellow Jackets, all without committing a turnover, becoming the first Duke player with a 30-point double-double and no turnovers in the past 40 seasons.
The 40 honored players for the Oscar Robertson Trophy and All-America consideration will be placed on the association's annual awards ballot, which also includes the Wayman Tisdale National Freshman Player of the Year Award, the Henry Iba National Coach of the Year Award and the 15-man USBWA All-America Team.
The All-America Team, Freshman Player of the Year and National Coach of the Year awards are announced before the start of the men's NCAA Tournament. The Oscar Robertson Trophy winner is to be announced at the NCAA Men's Final Four in Glendale, Arizona, from April 6-8. The formal presentation of the trophy will follow at the annual USBWA Awards Luncheon hosted by the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.
