Trio of Blue Devils Named to the Stopper of the Year Watch List

DALLAS, Texas – Graduate Charlie Beilenson, junior Fran Oschell III and sophomore James Tallon have been named to the initial watch list for the 19th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball.
Duke and Notre Dame are the only two programs with three nominees on the preseason watch list.
Of the 73 nominees on the watch list, three were named 2023 Stopper of the Year finalists and 11 were honored as preseason NCBWA All-American's. Tallon was a finalist for the award last season, and he was joined by Oschell III on the NCBWA first team preseason All-America team.
Beilenson, a six-foot right-handed pitcher, broke the school record for appearances in a season during the 2023 campaign, posting 39 outings on the mound. He tallied a 6-3 record and recorded a 3.86 ERA. The Los Angeles, Calif., native fanned a team-high 78 batters while holding opponents to a .242 average at the plate.
Oschell III, a 6-foot-7 right-handed pitcher, was a member of the 2023 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and was named an All-American by Perfect Game (2nd team), Baseball America (3rd team) and D1Baseball (3rd team). The Phoenixville, Pa., native posted a perfect 6-0 record out of the bullpen for the Blue Devils in his 22 appearances. He finished the year with a 0.69 ERA, allowing just three earned runs to score. Oshell III concluded the 2023 campaign with 66 strikeouts and held opponents to a .133 average at the plate.
Tallon, a 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher, became the seventh player in program history to be named to the All-ACC freshman team and was a consensus All-American. He broke the single season saves record with 12 in his 33 innings of work. The Arlington, Va., native held opponents to a .185 batting average against and struck out 54 batters during his rookie campaign. Tallon was named a Stopper of the Year finalist last season as a freshman.
