DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman
Toby Fournier registered 23 points and
Oluchi Okananwa added 20 points to lead the ninth-ranked Blue Devils to a 93-58 victory over Wofford in women's basketball action Wednesday night.
Fournier added seven rebounds to her 23-point performance while Okananwa finished her night with six rebounds and five assists to go with her 20 points.
Reigan Richardson keyed the Duke (10-2, 1-0) offense with 10 assists, and also chipped in eight points to just miss registering her first career double-double.
Delaney Thomas also finished in double figures with 15 points and
Jadyn Donovan led the charge on the glass with 11 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wofford tallied the game's first point via a split trip at the charity stripe. A 14-2 Duke avalanche over the next five minutes powered the Blue Devils ahead, 14-3, with less than three minutes to play in the opening period.
- Fournier netted the first eight points for Duke during the 14-2 spurt and finished the opening frame with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting.
- Sophomores Jadyn Donovan, Okananwa and Jordan Wood also made their presence known combining for 11 Blue Devil points, as Duke held a 22-7 advantage after the opening 10 minutes.
- The Blue Devils finished the second quarter with a plus-six margin on the scoreboard (20-14) and took a 42-21 lead into the break.
- Fournier added six more points to lead five Blue Devil scorers in the frame as she finished the half with 16 points. Senior Reigan Richardson also got going with five points during the period.
- Duke extended its lead to 28 points midway through the third quarter before the Terriers went on a 13-4 run to bring it to 19, 57-38.
- Thomas and Donovan scored six of the final eight points of the quarter, sending the Blue Devils into the fourth quarter with a 63-40 lead. Duke shot 56 percent in the quarter with Thomas finishing the period with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
- Duke closed the game with a 12-2 run in the final 3:26 for the 35-point non-conference win. Duke shot 51 percent overall and outrebounded Wofford 56-20 for the game.
NOTES:
- For the third time in four seasons Duke has totaled at least nine victories during non-conference play.
- Duke held Wofford to seven points during the opening 10 minutes - the fourth opponent held to single digits in the opening frame this season and the the lowest first quarter point total by a Duke foe on the year.
- Wofford's 21 total points and 26-percent field goal percentage (8-of-31) in the opening half also marked season lows for a Duke opponent.
- With its 93 points versus Wofford, Duke pushed its streak of consecutive games scoring 70-plus points to 12. The Blue Devils have eclipsed the 80-point threshold seven times this season and scored 90-plus points twice.
- Duke pulled down a season-high 56 rebounds against the Wofford, including a 19-5 edge on the offensive glass.
- Duke knocked down 34-of-67 (.507) shots from the field, finishing the game shooting 50 percent or better from the field for the seventh time this season. The Blue Devils also shot 19-of-27 (.704) percent from the charity stripe and knocked down six shots from deep.
- Duke shot at a 72 percent clip during the fourth quarter - its highest of the season.
- Defensively, Duke forced 11 Wofford turnovers, collected seven steals and blocked four shots. The Blue Devils held Wofford to 58 points and 34 percent from the field. The point total and shooting percentage were the second lowest by the Terriers this season.
- The Blue Devils finished with three players in double figures - Toby Fournier (23), Oluchi Okananwa (20) and Delaney Thomas (15). Duke has had at least three players reach double digits in each game this season.
- Duke won the specialty stats battle, finishing with the advantage in four of five categories - points off the bench (53-14), in the paint (50-24), second chance points (18-0) and in transition (9-8).
- With the 53 points by its reserves, Duke's bench has poured in 50-plus points on four occasions this season. The 53 points against the Terriers is second most by the Blue Devils this season, trailing only the 58 points scored against Dayton (11.14).
- Freshman Toby Fournier notched her eighth double-figure outing of the season, finishing with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-11 shooting and 7-of-8 at the charity stripe. Fournier added seven boards and two rejections to her statline to round out the superb performance. It is the rookie's second consecutive 20-point game and third of the season.
- Oluchi Okananwa turned in her 22nd career double-figure scoring effort via a stellar all-around performance with 20 points, six rebounds, five assists (no turnovers) and four steals. The sophomore did most of her damage in the second half with 13 points (6-of-7), four rebounds and four assists.
- Okananwa has reached double figures in three consecutive games and eclipsed 20 points for the third time in her career.
- Sophomore Delaney Thomas notched her fourth straight game in double-figures with a season-high 15 points on a very efficient 7-of-8 shooting, while also snagging five rebounds. She is averaging 14.3 points on 87 percent shooting over her last three games.
- Sophomore Jadyn Donovan and senior Reigan Richardson slotted themselves into the individual program single game records with outstanding performances in the first quarter. Richardson set the program record for most first quarter assists with six dimes, while Donovan's six boards during the opening frame tied for third all-time.
- Richardson finished the game with a career-high 10 assists, while also adding eight points and five rebounds for the near double-double.
- Donovan ended her night with a game-high 11 caroms - five coming on the offensive glass - to go with her six points.
- Jordan Wood turned in another solid performance off the Blue Devil bench with the sophomore notching a near double-double of nine points and eight rebounds.
- Junior Ashlon Jackson chipped in eight points and four rebounds.
