DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – Duke women's soccer freshman
Mary Long and the United States Under-17 Women's Youth National Team collected a 3-0 win over England on Sunday to claim the bronze medal at the eighth FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The medal for the U.S. marked its first and best U-17 Women's World Cup finish since the inaugural event back in 2008 when it won silver.
In the bronze medal match, the United States received goals from Kennedy Fuller, Ainsey McCammon and Maddie Padelski. The U.S. outshot England, 20-12, with an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks as well.
Long, a native of Mission Hills, Kan., received the start for the fifth consecutive match at forward for the United States. She registered a goal against South Korea during the group stage in a 5-0 victory over South Korea.
Long will return to Durham and be available for the postseason with the top-ranked Blue Devils, which opens Thursday, Nov. 7 in the semifinals of the ACC Championship at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. The time will be announced on Monday, Nov. 4.
