WACO, Texas – The Duke duo of Irina Balus and Ellie Coleman had their run come to an end Friday at the NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championship at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco.Â
Â
Balus and Coleman dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Florida's Rachel Gailis and Alicia Dudeney. In the first set, the Gators opened with a 3-1 lead, but the Blue Devils came back to even the ledger, 3-3. After Gailis and Dudeney took a 4-3 advantage, Duke held serve to even the score, 4-4. Florida once again took the next point on serve and the Blue Devils opened the next game with a 40-0 lead. The Gators made a big comeback to take the game and clinch the victory.
Â
With the loss, Balus and Coleman moved to 9-2 on the season heading into dual match play in the spring. Â Their appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals was the first for Duke since 2018 and they were just the 11th doubles tandem in program history to reach the quarterfinals.Â
