ITA Sectionals End for Men's Tennis with Doubles Title

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Duke men's tennis capped ITA Sectional Championship play Sunday with a doubles title.

"I'm very proud of our collective performance this week," assistant coach TJ Pura said. "The guys earned these wins through consistent and intentional work on a daily basis. All throughout the fall, we have been stressing the notion of 'dominating the controllable.' We are seeing it pay off during gut-check moments in matches. There is still plenty of work to be done, but we are on the right track."

In doubles, Cooper Williams and Theo Winegar were declared champions after No. 4 seed Dhakshineswar Suresh and Ioannis Xilas of Wake Forest withdrew. The Blue Devil duo had qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship with the pair's victory yesterday.

"No one gets more reps than Theo," Pura said. "He is incredibly committed to the process and finding small ways to improve on a daily basis. I love the resolve he's shown in overcoming challenges this fall. As a result, he's earned his best tennis of the semester. We will continue to chip away between now and Waco. I'm so excited to see the mentality and level of tennis he brings to NCAAs."

Williams, the No. 2 seed in the singles bracket, was set to play in the semifinals today, but neither match was contested after all four individuals qualified for the NCAA Singles Championship with their victories on Saturday.

"Happy to see Cooper punch his ticket to Waco," Pura added. "He earned it. It's never easy adjusting to an entirely new environment, but he has shown tremendous growth both on and off the court with each passing week. He is one heck of a competitor. I really enjoyed our time together on the court this week."
