NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Through 36 holes, the Duke men's golf team sits in 11th place at the Fighting Irish Classic, at 26-over, 586. The Blue Devils fired a 10-over, 290, in the morning and followed up with a 16-over, 296, in the second round.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND ONE
- Bryan Kim led the Duke lineup in the first round, carding an even-par, 70, in the morning session. Starting on hole No. 4, the sophomore bogeyed two of his first three holes, but rolled in a birdie on the par-5 fifth to help limit the damage. A second birdie within his first five holes, this time on No. 8, got Kim back to even-par, where he stood as he turned to the back-nine. Kim then rolled in a birdie on the 245-yard, par-3, 11th to reach red figures. Seven consecutive pars followed, before a dropped shot on No. 1 closed out the even-par round.
- Both Ethan Evans and Luke Sample signed for a 3-over, 73, in the first round.
- Evans' round started with a birdie on the par-5 fifth, but four bogeys across his next eight holes pushed the junior to 3-over for the round. Back-to-back birdies, on holes No. 16 and 17, were followed by back-to-back bogeys on holes No. 18 and 1 en route to the 3-over, 73.Â
- Sample, like his teammate, started his round with a birdie, rolling it in on the 473-yard, par-4, sixth. The senior also found another birdie, on the par-5, 17th, but dropped shots on four holes across his round to card his 3-over, 73.
- John Peters shot a 4-over, 74, in the first round. Peters made two birdies throughout the round, including a closing birdie on the long, par-4, seventh, helping the senior erase late back-to-back bogeys in his round.
- Kelly Chinn used a strong finish of back-to-back birdies to shoot a 5-over, 75, in the first round.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: ROUND TWO
- Two Blue Devils paced the lineup in the second round with a 3-over, 73 - Ethan Evans and Luke Sample.
- Evans' lone birdie of the round was on the par-4 sixth hole, while the junior added 13 pars and scattered four bogeys across the remainder of his afternoon round.Â
- Sample only tallied three bogeys in his second round, but was unable to find a birdie in his other 15 holes of the round, finishing off his 3-over trip around the course.
- Bryan Kim and John Peters followed, each carding a 5-over, 75, while Kelly Chinn rounded out Duke's day with an 8-over, 78.  Â
- Kim started with a birdie on the par-3 fourth, but stumbled across his next eight holes, playing those at 7-over. The sophomore took advantage of the lone back-nine par-5, making birdie on No. 17, before steadying the ship with a finish of four straight pars.
- Peters also rolled in a total of two birdies in the second round, finding success on holes No. 17 and 1, while scattering dropped shots on six different holes in the afternoon.
- Chinn rolled in one birdie for his second round, becoming the third different Blue Devil to birdie the par-5 17th.Â
NOTES
- Bryan Kim's first round featured birdies on two of the hardest holes of that round. His birdie on the par-4 eighth, which played as the second-hardest hole of the round, was one of just four on that hole in the morning. The sophomore's birdie on the par-3 11th, which played as the fourth-hardest hole, was one of just five.Â
- Three different Blue Devils played the par-5's under-par in the first two rounds - Kim, Ethan Evans and Luke Sample - who all finished those holes at 1-under through 36 holes.
