CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Duke women's tennis team continued its strong showing at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals on Saturday as four singles players advanced to the quarterfinals, while one doubles team moved on to the semifinals at the Chewning Tennis Center in Chapel Hill.
In singles play,
Irina Balus collected the biggest victory of her collegiate career so far as she upended top-seeded and No. 10 ranked
Sarah Hamner of South Carolina, 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore
Shavit Kimchi totaled a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tatum Evans, while
Emma Jackson knocked off 123rd-ranked Anna Zhang of Wake Forest, 7-5, 6-2, and
Eleana Yu posted a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win against Appalachian State's Savannah Dada-Mascoll.
Ellie Coleman had her singles run end with a 2-6, 6-1, 3-6 loss to Sara Suchankova.
The quarterfinals will begin at 9 a.m., on Sunday with Balus against Suchankova, Kimchi versus Mia Slama of NC State, Jackson taking on Kaitlyn Carnicella of South Carolina and Yu faces 26th-ranked Carson Tanguilig of North Carolina.
In doubles play, Duke's duo of Coleman and Balus advanced to the semifinals where they will face Elon's Helen Sarikulaya and Miray Konar on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Blue Devil tandem defeated South Carolina's Misa Malkin and Olympe Lancelot of South Carolina, 8-2, and Kristina Paskauskas and Jasmine Conway of NC State, 8-4, on Saturday.
Duke's
Katie Codd and Kimchi dropped an 8-6 decision to Slama/Paskauskas of NC State, while
Ava Krug and Yu fell, 8-4, to 80th-ranked Whitley Pate and Zhang of Wake Foerst.
