DURHAM, N.C. – Boosted by four goals over a span of seven minutes and 24 seconds in the first half, the top-ranked Duke women's soccer team went on to register a 7-0 victory on Saturday evening against Boston College in ACC action inside Koskinen Stadium.
Duke sophomore
Mia Oliaro, who hails from Chapel Hill, N.C., had a day with two goals and two assists for a career-high six points in 70 minutes. The Blue Devil defense also posted their seventh clean sheet of the season.
The Blue Devils improved to 12-1-0 on the year and 7-0-0 in ACC play, while Boston College dropped to 10-4-5, 2-4-1. Duke has now won 12 consecutive contests and is 8-0 at home this year.
How It Happened
- The Blue Devils featured a number of early shots in the first half, but didn't have any very dangerous opportunities.
- Boston College had the first excellent chance as Andi Barth got past the Duke defense on the right side of the box and had a shot that was saved by Blue Devil goalkeeper Leah Freeman in the 26th minute.
- Duke responded though in the 30th minute with a goal of its own.Sophomore Mia Minestrella found sophomore Mia Oliaro outside the box and used her left foot to send a cross in the box to junior Julia Saunicheva.A product of San Jose, Calif., Saunicheva settled the ball and punched in her first collegiate goal past the Eagle goalkeeper with her left foot.
- Oliaro then added her fifth career goal of the year in the 37th minute as she drove into the box and used her left foot to curl the ball into the top left corner of the net to put Duke ahead, 2-0, off an assist from Minestrella.
- A little more than a minute later, the Blue Devils registered their third goal of the match as Oliaro sent a ball to the 13-yard mark to sophomore Phoebe Goldthwaite, who touched a short pass to Minestrella.A native of Redondo Beach, Fla., Minestrella took one touch and blasted in her seventh goal of the season at the 37:49 mark.
- Then 31 seconds later, Boston College tried to clear the ball away from the goal line and it went off Duke freshman Sophia Recupero and into the goal to give the Blue Devils a 4-0 lead.
- At the end of the first half, Duke held a 4-0 lead and a 14-2 advantage in shots.
- In the 59th minute, the Blue Devils added another goal to the scoreboard as Ella Hase drove down the left side of the pitch and into the box, before crossing a perfect pass to a wide open Maggie Graham, who finished her ninth goal of the season.
- Hase worked her magic again in the 65th minute as she beat her defender going towards the end line and sent a cross in front of the goal to Oliaro for her second tally of the match to give Duke a 6-0 lead.
- Junior Carina Lageyre got into the scoring column for the first time this season at the 72:13 mark as Recupero did a great job of crossing the ball in front of the net and Lageyre received a deflection and finished her third career tally.
- For the match, Duke held a 30-4 shot advantage with Oliaro and Walters netting six each.
