STANFORD, Calif. – The top-ranked Duke women's soccer team went on the road Thursday and registered a 4-1 victory over seventh-ranked Stanford behind a hat trick by graduate student

Leah Freeman came up huge for the Blue Devils with a season-high seven saves and stopped a second half penalty kick. Graham tied a school record for goals (3) and points (7) on the night, while becoming just the eighth Duke player to collect a hat trick and only the second in ACC action.
The victory by the Blue Devils snapped a 34-match home unbeaten streak by Stanford at home inside Cagan Stadium. Duke's four goals also tied for the most allowed by the Cardinal at home in program history.
Duke improved to 10-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in ACC play, while Stanford dropped to 11-1-1, 3-1-1.
How It Happened
- On Duke's first shot attempt of the match, the Blue Devils connected on the goal to go ahead, 1-0, only 3:53 into the contest.Fifth year Ella Hase beat her defender to the end line and sent a perfect feed in front of the goal where graduate student Maggie Graham was there to finish inside the right post.
- Just 14 seconds later, Graham intercepted a pass from Stanford and beat the Cardinal keeper for her second goal of the evening and seventh of the season.It marked her third career brace to put Duke ahead, 2-0.
- Stanford was held without a shot until the 23:32 mark in which Blue Devil goalkeeper Leah Freeman made the easy save.
- The Cardinal made another run at the Duke goal in the 32nd minute, but Freeman made the diving stop coming up on Andrea Kitahata.
- At the 33: 24 mark, Stanford was able to get on the board to cut the Blue Devil lead to 2-1.The Cardinal sent in a corner kick that the Blue Devils were able to clear, but it went to Eleanor Klinger. Klinger placed a ball to the head of Shae Harvey.Harvey's attempt hit the post and bounced back in front of the goal and crossed the line, before Duke could clear it.
- The Blue Devils were limited without a shot over the final 27:18 of the first half.
- At the end of the first stanza, Duke and Stanford were tied, 4-4, in shots.
- Stanford had three shots early in the second half over a span of a minute, but Freeman made a great save on the only attempt on goal.
- Duke weathered a furious offensive attack over the first five minutes with a total of five shots, before Blue Devil junior Devin Lynch fired a shot that went just wide left of the post.
- Just about 10 minutes later Lynch connected for the Blue Devils.Sophomore Mia Oliaro crossed a ball over top of the keeper where Graham redirected it to the feet of a streaking Lynch, who finished inside the right post to give Duke a 3-1 lead in the 61st minute.
- At the 66:13 mark, the Blue Devils put their fourth goal on the board.Lynch fed a great ball down the left side of the pitch to junior Farrah Walters, who then lofted a cross where Graham was there to head in her third goal of the match for the hat trick.
- Freeman continued her outstanding game by saving a penalty kick in the 76th minute and then another shot after the save.
- For the match, Duke was outshot, 16-13.Graham scored on all three of her shot attempts.
Notes
- Maggie Graham collected her third career brace in the first 4:07 of the match.
- It marked the first multi-goal performance of the season for Duke and the first since Carina Lageyre on Sept. 17, 2023 at Boston College.
- Duke allowed a goal in the first half for only the second time this season (Clemson).
- The four first half shots for Duke were the second-fewest for the Blue Devils this season (North Carolina – 3).
- Graham totaled the eighth hat trick in Duke history and only the second in ACC regular season play.Her seven points and three goals both tied school records.The seven points in an ACC match were a school record.
- The hat trick was the first for Duke since Katilyn Kerr's against Loyola-Md., on Nov. 10, 2012.
- The four goals scored at Stanford were tied for the most allowed by the Cardinal at home in program history – California (1986), Cal State Hayward (1985).
- Duke collected four or more goals against a top 10 ranked opponent for the fourth time in program history – #8 Marquette (5-2, Sept. 9, 2012), #3 West Virginia (4-0, Sept. 8, 2017), #9 Clemson (4-1, Oct. 13, 2019).
- Devin Lynch totaled a goal and an assist and has scored or assisted in seven straight matches.
- Ella Hase notched her seventh assist on the season.
- Mia Oliaro has now posted a goal or assist in five straight matches.
- Graham has scored eight goals over her last nine contests.She has scored or assisted in eight out of her last nine contests.
- Freeman's seven saves equaled her Duke career high from a season ago and were a season high in 2024.
- Duke opened ACC play with a 5-0 start for only the second time in program lore (2017).
