BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 7 Duke (16-4, 7-2 ACC) had four different players finish in double-figures and seven Blue Devils scored at least eight points en route to a 77-67 victory over Virginia Tech (13-8, 5-5 ACC) on Monday night. Duke was led by
Jeremy Roach, who scored 16 points and dished four assists, and was joined in double-figures by
Kyle Filipowski,
Tyrese Proctor and
Ryan Young, who scored 14, 12 and 10, respectively.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The hosts tallied points on their first two possessions, going up 4-0 on two free throws and a dunk. Caleb Foster scored Duke's first bucket with a mid-range jumper two minutes into the contest. Kyle Filipowski logged the Blue Devils' next four points and a three-pointer by Foster drew Duke within two, 11-9, at the 14:46 mark. Another long-range bucket from Foster and a Filipowski layup gave the Blue Devils their first lead, 14-13. The score remained the same at the first media timeout, taken at 12:38 in the first half.
- A layup by Jared McCain made it 10 straight points for Duke and extended its lead to six, 19-13, shortly before the halfway mark of the opening frame. The Hokies were held without a made field goal for six-plus minutes and Duke established a nine-point advantage, 24-15, following a Jeremy Roach three-pointer.
- Duke took its first double-digit lead of the night, 32-21, after an emphatic jam by Mark Mitchell – forcing a Virginia Tech timeout with 3:28 left before halftime. Roach drilled a buzzer-beating three-pointer to snap a short eight-point burst by the Hokies and send Duke into halftime ahead by six, 35-29.
- Virginia Tech closed within one possession, 40-37, after a layup three minutes into the second half. Filipowski became the first Blue Devil in double-figures with a layup, giving the sophomore 11 points. Roach joined his teammate after his third three-pointer of the night gave the guard 11 points and Duke a 48-42 lead.
- A dunk by Ryan Young edged Duke back in front by 10, 61-51, with 10 minutes left to play in the game. Young reached 10 points with a layup out of the under-eight timeout, giving the graduate 10 points for the second time in five games, and the Blue Devils a 65-56 advantage.
- Mitchell dunked home his eighth point of the night, extending Duke's lead to 12, 73-61, with just over two minutes remaining in the game. A defensive stop on the ensuing possession and a successful jumper by Proctor helped the visitors close out the 77-67 victory.

QUOTES
- "Really good road win. A lot of respect for Virginia Tech and what they're capable of doing and the team that they have. They return a lot of the team that beat us here last year. I just thought our team had great togetherness, some timely threes, and some guys stepped up in key moments. I thought Ryan Young, just in his 14 minutes, was terrific. His three offensive rebounds – probably one of the best plays of the game was he switched out to [Hunter] Cattoor, then came back in for the block. Which is just a huge play at a big time. A lot of different guys stepped up. I think it was our defense – to hold this team to six three's is not easy. I can promise you. Especially on one-day prep. They run so many tough actions, misdirections. You have to have great communication. We did that. I thought our guards really controlled the game and then [Kyle Filipowski] came through down the stretch, just playing through him a little bit. Proud of this win. You get a chance to play two games in three days, and to win both of them is really good. Looking forward to building from here." - head coach Jon Scheyer
- "Coming in, we all knew that it was one of the toughest road games in our conference. And our history hasn't been good here. But I think our mental preparation, obviously, we couldn't do a lot because we had a game on [Saturday], but just flushing that win against Clemson, that was a real nail-biter and coming out here and just competing every possession." - sophomore guard Tyrese Proctor
