RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State junior guard Aziaha James scored a game-high 33 points to lead the No. 4 Wolfpack to a 72-57 victory over Duke in ACC women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum. Duke's
Kennedy Brown led the Blue Devils with 14 points.
NC State (16-2, 4-2) used a 17-5 run early in the first quarter to build an 11-point lead en route to the victory over the Blue Devils (12-6, 4-3).
Reigan Richardson and
Oluchi Okananwa both had double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The home team held a 10-point lead, 23-13, after the opening 10 minutes of play.
- Kennedy Brown led four Blue Devil scorers with six points, including the first two buckets of the game for Duke, while freshman Oluchi Okananwa grabbed three rebounds.
- Reigan Richardson joined in on the scoring action cashing in a couple of midrange jumpers at the start of the period.
- The Blue Devils also received field goals via freshmen Jadyn Donovan and Delaney Thomas as well as a 2-for-2 trip at the charity stripe by graduate student Camilla Emsbo. However, it was the Wolfpack who held a 38-23 lead at the break.
- Richardson (7) and Brown (4) combined for 11 of Duke's 15 third-quarter points, with Emsbo and Donovan accounting for the other two Duke field goals during the frame.
- Duke outscored NC State 19-13 in the final period as it attempted to make a rally. The Blue Devils opened the fourth quarter with an 11-3 run and trimmed their deficit to 13, 62-49, forcing the home team to call a timeout with 6:28 to play.
- Okananwa and Brown spearheaded the spurt with five and four points apiece, respectively.
- The deficit would prove to be too much to overcome, however, as the Wolfpack closed out the 15-point win.
