DURHAM — Former Duke women's basketball standout Jasmine Thomas has been hired as the Director of Player Programs and Development Coach by the Dallas Wings, the organization announced Friday afternoon. Thomas, who recently announced her retirement from the WNBA, will start with the Wings on Feb. 5.
"The most important part of my decision to retire was having a valuable opportunity to continue significantly impacting women's basketball in this next chapter of my life," Thomas stated. "I'm excited to join the Dallas Wings organization in a unique role that aligns with my passion for empowering athletes on and off the court. I'm looking forward to working with a fun group of dynamic players alongside Greg Bibb, Amber Cox, Coach Trammell and the Wings staff to bring a WNBA Championship to Dallas."
In her new role, Thomas will serve as a member of head coach Latricia Trammell's coaching staff primarily focusing on the roster's on-court skill development. She will also serve as a member of the Wings front office, working on the development and execution of programs centered around player services and support, including but not limited to career development, mentorship and philanthropic interests.
A four-year letterwinner and starter for the Blue Devils from 2007-2011, Thomas played in 137 career games with 120 starts and compiled a 111-26 record during her time in Bull City. The Fairfax, Va., product was a two-time All-ACC First Team Selection and a 2011 ACC All-Defensive Team selection while helping lead Duke to four ACC Championships – two regular season and two tournament – where she was twice named the ACC Tournament MVP.
Thomas was one of just two Blue Devils to collect 100 steals in a single season and became just the fourth Duke women's basketball player all-time to amass 1,300+ points, 400+ rebounds, 400+ assists, 200+ steals and 50 blocks over her career.
Following her time at Duke, Thomas was drafted by the Seattle Storm with the 12th pick in the first round of the 2011 WNBA Draft and would go on to enjoy a lengthy career. After playing two seasons with the Washington Mystics (2011-12) and two with the Atlanta Dream (2013-14), Thomas was traded to the Connecticut Sun, where she would play and flourish for the next eight seasons.
Thomas shined during her time with the Sun, achieving career bests in scoring, assists, steals, three-point percentage and field goal percentage. Thomas earned a nod to the 2017 WNBA All-Star Game, was named to five WNBA All-Defensive Teams – three first team (2017-19) and two second team (2016, 2021). Most recently, Thomas was a member of the Los Angeles Sparks where she played in 32 games during the 2023 season.
