LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Athletic Club has announced Duke sophomore
Kyle Filipowski as one of 25 players named to the midseason watch list for the John R. Wooden Award, presented by Principal.
Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2023-24 season thus far, the list comprises 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport's most prestigious honor.
Hailing from Westtown, New York, Filipowski was tabbed a Preseason All-American and ACC Preseason Player of the Year after a prolific freshman season. The sophomore has upped both his overall and three-point shooting averages, shooting .530 from the field and .370 from beyond the arc, and is averaging 17.4 points per game through Duke's first 15 contests. Filipowski has also added 44 assists with just 27 turnovers, nearly doubling his assist-turnover ratio from last season and has blocked 29 shots, already eclipsing the 26 blocked shots he had during the 2022-23 campaign.
Averaging 8.6 rebounds per contest, the center has logged five double-doubles so far, pushing his career total to 21. Most recently, Filipowski turned in a stellar performance at Pittsburgh on Jan. 9, scoring 26 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. He finished 11-of-12 (.917) from the field against the Panthers, including 4-of-4 from three-point range, marking the best shooting performance by a Blue Devil with at least 10 field goal attempts since Zion Wiliamson went 13-of-13 versus Syracuse on March 14, 2019. He earned ACC Player of the Week honors in mid-December after 28 points, 12 rebounds and a career-high eight assists versus Hofstra, finishing just two dimes shy of the sixth all-time triple-double by a Blue Devil.
Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games.
The Wooden Award All American Team will be announced the week of the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2024 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Principal following the NCAA Tournament in April.
The award has been presented to a Duke men's basketball player six times in its 46-year history – the most by any program nationally. The Blue Devils' most recent winner was Zion Williamson in 2019.
