DURHAM – Duke men's and women's tennis received their first look at the renovated and expanded Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center on Tuesday evening.Â
Â
"What an incredible night for Duke tennis," head women's coach
Jamie Ashworth said. "Not just our team, but the men's team as well. It has been a long time coming. To see their reactions and to see the smiles on their faces to get back into their locker room and see this incredible space was worth the wait. There are so many people to thank. The incredible donors we've had with our program. Obviously, Nina (King) and her staff, Bob Weiseman and his staff, Zach (White) and the fundraising staff and the support of Leslie Barnes – everybody just all came together for this night. We couldn't be happier. This was a vision we had a long time ago and to see it actually come to fruition, is just incredible".
Â
Over the past year and a half, the tennis facility underwent significant renovations to its locker rooms, coaches' offices, training room and conference room. In addition, a team lounge and kitchen were added during the reconstruction.
Â
"It's absolutely amazing," head men's coach
Ramsey Smith added. "It blows everything out of the water that we were hoping for. Duke did it the right way. We want to thank the unbelievable supporters of our program for making this happen. I am just so happy for our student-athletes, our alumni, our staff, and everyone involved with Duke tennis."

"I'm super pumped," graduate student
Andrew Zhang said. "It's way better than I ever imagined. The thought and everything that went into this building is just unbelievable. I'm super excited for it and IÂ can't wait to call this place home."
Â
Following the 2022-23 season, all 12 outdoor courts at Ambler Tennis Stadium were also rebuilt on post-tensioned concrete with Laykold U.S. Open surface. The final stage of the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center renovation project begins later this month with the addition of a 3,500-foot plaza in front of the building. That is expected to be completed in the Summer of 2024.
Â
"This experience has truly been one of a kind," graduate student
Brianna Shvets added. "I mean, I knew we were going to get an upgrade. I had briefly seen the building when I came in as a graduate transfer. But I was only in the locker room for about two weeks and I really thought they were amazing then, but now coming in, it's just so decked out, it's beautiful. It's truly such a wonderful piece of art and just seeing how excited everybody is incredible. I'm super thankful. It's nothing like I could have imagined so thank you to all the donors that made this happen."
Â
The women's team opens the 2024 campaign Saturday at 1 p.m. when they welcome SMU to Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The Blue Devil men also begin their season at home when they host VCU on Saturday, Jan. 20 at noon.
