DURHAM – Duke head men's basketball coach
Jon Scheyer announced Friday the team's captains for the 2023-24 season, naming graduate student
Ryan Young, senior
Jeremy Roach and sophomore
Tyrese Proctor to the position. The announcement was made by Coach Scheyer during Duke's on-campus media day Friday in the Bill Brill Media Room at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Roach is appointed for the second consecutive year after serving as the team's lone captain during Scheyer's debut season as head coach in 2022-23. Young and Proctor are each first-time captains, but second-year Blue Devils, as Young was a graduate transfer to Duke from Northwestern before the start of last season and Proctor is a year removed from an ACC All-Freshman campaign.
"Being named a captain is something that has been meaningful in our program for a long time," said Scheyer. "I'm proud of these three guys. I let each of our players vote – and it was a consensus with our staff as well – so it's certainly more meaningful when it comes from both the players and the staff."
Entering his second college season, Proctor becomes just the fourth sophomore captain in Duke's basketball history, joining
Tre Jones in 2020 and
Greg Paulus and Josh McRoberts in 2007.
Roach joins a recent list of two-time captains that includes
Jack White and
Javin DeLaurier (2019, 2020),
Amile Jefferson (2015, 2016, 2017),
Matt Jones (2016, 2017),
Ryan Kelly (2012, 2013) and Scheyer (2009, 2010).
"Jeremy's experience, being a senior, going to the Final Four, going through some of the trials and tribulations since he's been here, will be really important," said Scheyer. "Ryan is probably our most vocal person on the team. His voice, you can ask any of our players, carries a lot of weight on and off the court. Then Tyrese has been the guy, on the floor, who's been the most demonstrative in terms of challenging other players on the team. He's not afraid to say anything to anybody."
