DURHAM – Duke women's soccer head coach
Robbie Church announced Thursday a trio of Blue Devils –
Nicky Chico,
Maggie Graham and
Katie Groff -- were named team captains for the 2023 campaign. The captains were decided following a team vote.
"First of all, we would like to congratulate Nicky, Katie and Maggie," said Church. "They were voted by their teammates and coaches to be our captains. Starting in January, we had terrific guidance with our six seniors forming a leadership group. Throughout the spring, summer and into the fall season, they have done a tremendous job leading our squad. These young ladies will be exceptional captains both on and off the field, mentoring and setting the tone for our program. Olivia [Migli], Grace [Watkins] and Emily [Royson] will still be heavily involved as well with our leadership committee so we are excited to see where this group takes us."
A native of Wyckoff, N.J., Chico has appeared in 43 matches over the last four years along with eight starts at both the midfield and defender positions. She has started two out of the first three matches in 2023 on defense helping lead the Blue Devils to a 2-1 ledger, including a shutout against West Virginia in the season opener. Chico has logged 1,591 minutes over her four years and notched a goal against Virginia Tech as a sophomore.
A mainstay in the midfield since arriving four years ago, Graham has started 37-of-66 matches in a Blue Devil uniform. She has totaled seven goals and nine assists for 23 points over four seasons. A product of Atlanta, Ga., Graham has also collected two game-winning goals, including the deciding goal at Syracuse a season ago as time was expiring. She has played 3,741 minutes and was an All-ACC Academic Team selection as a junior.
Since her sophomore season, Groff has started 47-of-48 matches and helped lead Duke to 35 shutouts during that span. She has a knack for scoring big goals as three of her five career tallies are game-winners, while adding five assists over her four seasons. Last season, Groff headed in the game-winner against Texas to send Duke into the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Groff, who hails from Raleigh, N.C., has seen action in 4,144 minutes as a Blue Devil.
Duke will next travel to third-ranked Stanford on Saturday, Sept. 2 as the Blue Devils take eight student-athletes back to their home state of California. The match will kick at 10 p.m. (ET) live on Pac-12 Insider.
