Barton, Carter Selected to Lombardi Award Preseason Watch List

DURHAM – Duke senior offensive lineman Graham Bartonand redshirt senior defensive tackle DeWayne Carter have been named to the preseason watch list for the Lombardi Award, which is an honor presented annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman who exemplifies the character and discipline of NFL Hall of Fame Head Coach Vince Lombardi in addition to outstanding performance and ability.

This is Barton's second preseason watch list selection as he was also tabbed to the Outland Trophy watch list. Carter picked up his third watch list nomination after being named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Chuck Bednarik Award watch lists.

Barton returns for his third season as Duke's starting left tackle and was tabbed a preseason All-America selection by Athlon Sports (2nd team), Phil Steele's College Football Preview (2nd team) and Walter Camp (Honorable Mention).

In 31 career games (30 starts), Barton has amassed 2,160 snaps. During the 2022 campaign, the Brentwood, Tenn., native was selected an honorable mention All-American by Phil Steele Publications and a first team All-ACC honoree. Barton anchored an offensive line unit that ranked first in the ACC in sacks allowed (17) and tackles for loss allowed (51).

The 6-5, 314-pound lineman held a Pro Football Focus grade of 88.2 at the conclusion of the 2022 season, which ranked fifth nationally among offensive tackles. He was the only Power 5 tackle to earn 85.0 grades as both a pass blocker and run blocker.

Carter returns for his third consecutive season as Duke's starting defensive tackle. The three-time team captain has compiled 86 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 11.0 sacks, seven caused fumbles, three fumble recoveries, 11 quarterback pressures and seven pass breakups in 39 career games.

The Pickerington, Ohio, native has recorded two or more tackles in 19 career games, including a career-high nine tackles against Georgia Tech in 2022. He posted a career-high 2.0 tackles for loss in four contests against North Carolina (2021 & 2022), Boston College (2022) and Wake Forest (2022). Additionally, Carter enters the 2023 campaign tied for fourth in program history for caused fumbles and just 0.5 sacks shy of becoming the 17th Duke player with 11.5 career sacks.
